Broad Street median parking will not be allowed during the DNC

The Democratic National Convention may be bringing some cool additions to South Philly and the city at large, with things like murals and the decorated donkeys, but it is also complicating daily routines for many in the city.

In addition to the off-limit areas in the Stadium District for the convention from July 25 through 28, South Philadelphians are going to have to face even more of a parking struggle than usual. Parking on the median of South Broad Street is being banned for the duration of the DNC.

While the median parking is technically prohibited, it is largely practiced by residents and ignored by local authorities. For the DNC, this will be a different story. The parking is being banned in the median to protect the protesters who are expected to march down Broad during the convention.

The parking situation won’t be as bad as the restrictions set during the papal visit, but it will still put a damper on the routines of many residents.

The parking restriction for the median of Broad Street will begin on the morning of July 24 and end on the evening of July 29.

    But where will I park the 5 extra long Cadillacs I have registered in NJ but that are all necessary for my 2 bedroom rowhome!!!!!!!!!!

    Enforcing the parking laws should be made permanent.

      I completely agree with the above sentiment. And why doesn’t the PPA do so? It seems like a great way to increase revenue per time since they’d be writing tickets one after the other up the entire street.

        Because, as Bob alluded to, the NIMBY’s will be up in arms, and Philly’s biggest weakness is its lack of willingness to stand up to it’s natives.

        Why doesn’t the PPA enforce? Believe it or not, it’s because the cars are parked “IN” the street. Apparently that is not PPA jurisdiction, that falls on the PPD, and they don’t have the time. That was the official party line.

          You were told a lie. If that were the case, then the PPA would never be able to write tickets for double parking, which is its own handy little check box on parking tickets.

            Not so sure about that pal. The article states the Mayor’s office has directed the PPD to enforce the law.
            Not the PPA.
            Parking in the median is a TRAFFIC citation.

            Either way, it should remain enforced.

              That is all well and good, but the “in the street” argument is a lie. Double parking proves that.

    It’s an easy long-term fix. Install a concrete median with trees in the middle from Oregon all the way to South Street. Or maybe even bike lanes in the middle to try and funnel bike commuters from the other streets to someplace with more room.

      I LOVE this idea! I’ve seen cities where they have protected bike lanes and this would be a perfect solution for the center of Broad.

        It would also give bike commuters a safer way to get to Center City from deep South Philly, while also relieving the frustration for many drivers who have to try and squeeze by bikes on the thinner streets.

      similar lack of enforcement along Oregon Ave, and the median there doesn’t stop anyone from parking there…even in the turning lanes. It’s a joke.

    Please tell me how this bit of extra parking affects you in any way. You seem to think everyone that has a car in the city doesn’t need it and should take public transportation or a bike. news flash, I live in the city and love it but work in Wilmington. I drive every day and thus park my car every day. I don’t park on broad since I live 4 blocks from it but it never bothered me. As for a bile lane ( I ride all the time and that median is no place for a bike lane when you have cars making left turns, not to mention it is too thin for two way travel as a bike lane.

      There is no side-stepping the issue of turning cars. However, there are many instances in other cities of a center bike lane working well. The lights would need to be retrofitted and cars would need to watch where they’re turning just like anywhere else.

    Those aren’t only residents parking for free in the median. It’s them commuters! It’s amazing how much free parking is available on South Broad.
