Newly-opened Greenstreet Coffee shop already closing in Passyunk Square
Greenstreet Coffee decided to open a shop at 1134 Dickinson St. to expand the South Philly-based roastery with its first cafe in this area. After just a month in the location, Greenstreet has now decided that it’s time to move on.
While Passyunk Square may be losing this coffee shop, Point Breeze will be gaining a new one. Greenstreet plans to open a new shop in just a few weeks at 1921 Alter St.
A barista at Greenstreet told us that the owners felt that the location hadn’t turned out as well as they had envisioned, which is what prompted this decision to move. The new coffee shop will be located next to Greenstreet’s headquarters for coffee roasting.
With this coffee shop leaving the location and the former plans for a bar in this spot falling through, what should happen to this now-renovated storefront in Passyunk Square?
The last day to grab coffee at Greenstreet’s Passyunk Square spot is Friday, July 29. Expect to see the new location open in just a few weeks.
So weird, I was excited for this place to open. It felt like they literally had no plan for this place. Their grand opening was on 4th of July when it was absolutely sweltering out, and I don’t think the place had central air.
Also, the couple times I went in there was no music and no decoration whatsoever. Great ambiance! Hot, silent and blank canvas!
I guess the bones for some kind of bar / small restaurant are there now…
Didn’t even no they had opened. That might have something to do with “not turning out as well as envisioned”.
there’s no way that’s the truth. Places don’t close in under a month without something really wrong happening.
I tried going a few times but they never had any food. It seems like they never actually planned to stay there anyway.
I was in there one day and the owner was behind the counter. He seemed to be on something. When discussing coffee with me his disposition was to mock and insult my preferences.
Place was pretty bare when I was in there last weekend, some of the worst cold brew i’ve ever had. The cortado (which was really a machiato) was really good though.
Can’t say I’m surprised, although I am disappointed. I just don’t understand what they were doing. They opened with pretty much no announcement, and then the place looked like it wasn’t even ready to open. I went in a few times because I live less than a block away, but it was really strange, like the place wasn’t really open. Met a nice guy serving the coffee, but it looked like he was so stoned that he can barely talk. Good luck to them, but I don’t really get it.
And their new spot looks like a terrible Choice. Maybe they’ll get a bunch of people from graduate hospital and some folks from Point Breeze, but I can’t see them being much more successful in that new space. I know I won’t Venture that way for coffee.
I didn’t even know they had opened! I was just telling my husband last night that a new coffee shop was opening there soon.
I wonder if the window flies showed up? That building is utterly infested with window flies.
Sad, but I honestly have been walking by it every other day and didn’t realize it was open – I had wanted to check it out.
Between B2, Black and Brew, Ultima moving in, Bennas West to the …west, Chhaya and Plenty to the south, not to mention all the other locations to get a cup of joe like Green Eggs and Essen – it is a pretty caffeinated area.
Did they advertise, promote or market themselves in any way? Or did they just silently open and hope people would find them? Even a big sign in the window announcing, say, free coffee on opening day could have attracted business. The days of “if you build it, they will come” are long gone.
Wow, insane. They opened July 4th weekend so didn’t even last a month. How can someone open a business in the middle of summer without a long term vision? I have to say that I was there a few times and the place was not well run at all. Bummer!
I’d love to see a good bagel place in the neighborhood. Perhaps a South Philly branch of Knead?? A guy can dream. Not sure if this location has enough space, but that’s the kind of place that would create enough buzz to sustain a business in this tucked away spot. Anyway, the larger point here is that I WANT BAGELS!!

I thought it was a ‘Pop Up’ coffee shop anyway. The ambiance was transient.
