Newbold no more: Neighborhood Association votes in favor of name change

Earlier this summer Newbold Neighbors, the RCO that covers Broad Street to 18th Street and from Washington Avenue to West Passyunk Avenue, announced that they were reconsidering the neighborhood name “Newbold.”

Residents have expressed mixed feelings about the name, which some feel only emphasizes the new in the neighborhood, not the diversity of residents that live there. At a meeting last week, the issue was put to a vote. Newbold Neighbors is no longer the community association’s name, but what should the neighborhood be called?

According to Newbold Neighbors, the final vote was 18-5, with those in favor of the name change being the large majority of attendees of the Wednesday, July 27 meeting.

From NNA’s newsletter:

We hope that changing our name will allow us to become stronger in the long-term by connecting to all residents in our amazing section of Point Breeze.

If this area is no longer Newbold, what should it be? You can email any name ideas to president@newboldneighbors.org. Let us know what you think in the comments.

Last time PP posted about this, old-timers were all, “It’s Point Breeze, period.” But if they leave the boundaries as-is, then Point Breeze doesn’t make much sense. They don’t represent all of PB. East Point Breeze? Name it after a small street that runs through it, maybe: Bancroft, Chadwick. (Probably not Mole or Hicks.)

How about simply “Classic South Philly”. Kind of like Classic Coke. The same, only revisited and a bit better.

I wonder if the name change will really change attitudes. Regardless, I submit n00b-old. It is both new and old.
