PPA to begin ticketing some of the illegally parked vehicles on the Broad Street median
South Philly residents are still pretty split on whether or not parking should be allowed on the Broad Street median, as shown through this recent survey.
A permanent ban on this already-illegal parking won’t be happening at this time, but Mayor Kenney is trying to please both sides of the issue by making some new enforcements on Broad Street. The Philadelphia Parking Authority will now be ticketing vehicles in the median only “when a car is fishtailed, in the turning lane, and in the crosswalk.”

“The mayor, the PPA and members of the administration met to discuss the median parking issue a few weeks ago, before the administration met with 5th Square this week,” Kenney spokeswoman Lauren Hitt said on Wednesday. “In that meeting, we agreed that PPA should ticket in the median when a car is fishtailed, in the turning lane, and in the crosswalk. We also agreed that any other changes should be community-driven.”
When they start ticketing vehicles in the crosswalk that are parked outside the Twin Shoppe at 10th and Tasker then I’ll be impressed.
Totally agree… It’s become one of the most dangerous intersections in the area for pedestrians. Typically every cross-walk and curb-cut is blocked. I can’t imagine trying to cross the street here as a wheelchair user.
It’s a nightmare trying to cross with a stroller. In a wheelchair has to be next to impossible

Completely predictable half-measure by Kenney. Looking forward to more from his “lead from behind” strategy of “I don’t want to change anything in South Philly, even if it makes sense.”

Large projects along Broad St should be required to build adequate parking structures (price of business). Did CHOP build parking?
yes, and now traffic on the south street bridge will be a fucking nightmare.
Well that falls on the people who have cars that they don’t need. After the big snow storm this past winter, I noticed the number of cars in South Philly that still had snow blocking them in up to two weeks after the storm. If you don’t need to move your car for two weeks, you don’t need that car. Parking in Philly is actually too easy compared with many other big cities, which encourages people to keep cars they don’t need and rarely use.
What about older folks who only need their car periodically for doctor vists and grocery shopping? Should they just ride their fixie everywhere? Or die?

Understand your concern for the older folks. This is why the City should not have destroyed the trolley system back in the day. At least we have a decent bus network and there are many new options for individuals who only use a car on rare occasion. Uber, Lyft, and even grocery and medicine delivery companies are great options. Also, car share is fairly inexpensive and much less than the cost of car insurance, yearly maintenance, gas, and inevitable parking tickets.

Awesome fixie joke aside, these “older folks” must not really like to take public transportation, or walk. If we’re talking their health being a detriment then why should they be driving, or parallel parking, let alone parking in the middle of Broad Street….because, yeah, the elderly should be parking in the middle of one of the busiest streets in the city (like that ain’t a safety/health hazard on its own) for parking.

You are so right. This neighborhood was pure garbage before we got here and all these lifers don’t appreciate anything we’ve done. TID is too nice to say it, but truth is, they couldn’t afford to buy a house here now like us. Message to you lifers: No one cares that you inherited your house or grew up in this neighborhood – you’re not welcome here anymore so either move or shut up. If you have to own a car, you should move now.

While I don’t agree with QOEPX’s message, at all, it is usually the opposite point of view that is expressed with so much anger. The 3rd generation neighborhood residents are the ones that typically are throwing around insults and telling newcomers to move away if they don’t like it. But most of us moved to these neighborhoods because they have a sense of community, or the possibility of it. The lifelong residents are accepting, until you have an idea that goes against what they are used to.
Neighborhoods change and traditions die out. That is inevitable. And for some reason, South Philly refuses to accept that, even when they claim things that were never really theirs in the first place, like the “Italian” market. If I hear one more 3rd Generation resident, under the age of 40 talk about how the Italian Market is not Italian anymore…The market was never Italian. It existed before the Italian community arrived. It had a strong Jewish presence from the beginning. But those traditions died out, at the hands of the “new” south philly community. But those lifelong residents seem to forget these things happened. It wasn’t even that long ago.
She is a queen of nothing… Ignorant newbies wanna just tell us we’re stupid and have no thought as to where all the cars are actually going to go. Whats even more ironic is the fact that the crowding is happening BECAUSE of newbies and their cars!!! Yes… You all don’t ride bikes and scooters through the snow, cold winds, and freezing rains in the winter time. No.. no you do not.. A significant few of the newbies scream loudly about their wondrous utilization of public transportation and bikes, but more than half of the newbies have cars of their own.
So here is my futile proposal of something they do in Miami FL… It is a pleasing to the eye answer to big box parking garages.

Kenney likes to bark, but rarely bites when it comes to South Philly. The exact opposite of what’s needed.
It’s really nice to see the way some of you refer to lifelong residents. Most of you are the same people who preach acceptance and welcome to all, very hypocritical. The parking situation is terrible. I don’t see why it bothers people having cars parked in the middle of Broad. To Anthony, Kenney has forgotten his south philly upbringing and roots. He serves no presence in South Philly anymore.

Seriously..South Philly was “pure garbage” before “you got here”??!! So neighborhoods & parishes like 2nd st, Girard Estate, Packer Park, the Reserves, Passyunk Ave, Annunciation, St. Monica’s, Epihany, St. Richards, Our Lady of Mt Carmel, etc,etc..are ..yes they do consist of life long residents & families with traditions that consist of either passing or selling their family owned homes among their children and grand-children. So that little row home you purchased for $110k in the neighborhood that you are revitalizing pales in comparison to the homes in that even with the real estate crash went for 300k & up. And, despite the fact, that I have my own family members that moved to NJ because they couldn’t afford a house in South Phila when comparing the $ /sq ft. Or it’s just me, maybe I’m stupid or “garbage” despite being a proud life long Italian American resident of South Philadelphia & achieving a chemical engineering degree from Villanova University on a full academic scholarship, but I believe that’s what makes our neighborhoods great & keeps them growing & together. I guess our businesses (a proud owner I am of a family owned & operated business that has operated in this “garbage” area of Philadelphia for over 36 years) & restaurants that “you” have all packed & now made “Passyunk Ave” one of the country’s best restaurant rows might not count for anything before “you” got here. I guess “you” are just now putting “south phila on the map.” Yet..I’m guessing “you” will be on 2nd street New Year’s night watching the Mummer’s (just a 100yr old tradition from our little “garbage” section of Phila) drinking your 6 pack of craft beer & smiling at what “you” have created. And all of this “new residents” vs “old residents” because some of you take privilege & offense about how/where people park on Broad St & feel it’s now your duty to clean up the streets & take out the “garbage”. Well..my best advise to “you” is Good Luck with that!!

They should decriminalize owning a car… Make it law before the newbies try to amp up their zero tolerance policies on parking and have mandatory minimum penalties for parking your car after 2 hours of searching for a spot…
