Frida Cantina finally opening in former Gavone’s location at 10th and Wolf
It’s been three years since we first told you about Raul Castro, owner of Plaza Garibali on Washington Avenue, and his plans to bring a new Mexican restaurant and bar to the former Gavone’s location at 10th and Wolf.
Despite some setbacks along the way, the Frida Kahlo-inspired bar called Frida Cantina is finally opening.
The menu at Frida Cantina consists of “Mexican street food favorites.” As Castro told us previously, the food is “home-style Mexican food, like the way my grandma, mom, and aunts cook at home.” In addition to the Mexican food selection, you’ll of course be able to enjoy margaritas and other specialty cocktails.
The restaurant has 60 varieties of tequila and mezcal available. There are five types of margaritas on the menu, including options like Pomegranate and Chipotle. The five other specialty cocktails include Paloma, a Drunken Arnold Palmer, Mexican Sangria and more. If you’re not a liquor lover, there are still plenty of beer options with Frida Cantina’s Mexican and craft beer selection.
Frida Cantina is having their grand opening celebration on Friday, August 26. You can swing by the restaurant for lunch starting at 11 a.m., and dinner starting at 4 p.m. On Saturday and Sunday you can also stop in for brunch at the restaurant. I probably wont go for food with los gallos across the street, but its cool to see a bar do cheladas/michelads in philly
I was about to say – there better be enough room for two of these places right there because I’ll be depressed if this hurts Los Gallos.
More fighting for parking spots on the street! We do not need these places in residential neighborhoods.

@JWC: you must be new here. There has been a bar in that building for only about the last 70 years. It was Priori’s. There was even a mob hit inside the joint in the late 70’s. So yeah, this is big effin’ improvement.

Sticking with my people at Los Gallos for food. Maybe I’ll have a drink there but that is it.

This is a great little establishment. It should not hurt Los Gallos’ business, as the food menu is smaller and doesn’t overlap what is served over there. I can imagine a good symbiosis between the two places. The staff at Frida’s are really nice and excited about the new venture! I wish them lots of success. I’d say it’s a great place for before or after-dinner cocktails and a snack.
