ShopRite opens today in Whitman Plaza
Over the past few weeks, ShopRite has been clearing out its location on Snyder Avenue to prepare for a big move to the former Pathmark location in Whitman Plaza. Since A&P Grocery filed for bankruptcy last summer and Pathmark closed soon after, the location has been empty.
Starting today, you’ll be able to stop in the larger retail space for all of your grocery shopping needs.
After a ribbon cutting ceremony at 9 a.m., the location will be fully operational with the normal grocery services, plus things like a cafe, larger pick-up and delivery areas, a dietician and more amenities for customers and employees alike.
While this vacancy and the other empty Pathmark storefront in Grays Ferry are being filled, there are still empty grocery stores spaces in other parts of South Philly. What would be the ideal tenant for the now-vacant Snyder location and the former SuperFresh on Columbus Boulevard?

Oh, how I do wish a Wegman’s would go in the former SuperFresh on Columbus Blvd. Is that space large enough for a Wegman’s operation? They have only done a suburban model. But it looks more suited for a Home Goods …
But what will this do for neighborhood parking!!?
The parking lot is huge! I highly doubt parking will be an issue for the neighborhood because of Shop Rite.

They got rid of the self check out lanes. Very bad!
How is it bad? It prevents the rampant self-scanner fraud and creates jobs. Self-checkout was created originally to allow supermarkets to hire fewer cashiers. Witness what happened when they installed it at the Acme at 10th and Reed years ago – all the older, more experienced cashiers got laid off and replaced with inexperienced teens.
Not to mention that the average grocery shopper has NO IDEA how to efficiently use it. I guarantee that 90 percent of the time, a line for a cashier will move more quickly than a line for self-scan.
That depends, if it’s used as intended, for users with 12 or fewer items, it moves very quickly. If, like the one at 23rd and Oregon, customers use it to ring out their weeks shopping, then yes it will take a long fucking time.
