What would you like to see improved at these three South Philly schoolyards?
It was recently announced that three South Philly schools would be planning for schoolyard reinvention, thanks to the Big Sandbox, Knight Foundation, TBS and students from the University of Colorado and Iowa State University. Landscape architecture students at the universities will be helping create designs for improved schoolyards at George W. Childs Elementary, the Stephen Girard School and Eliza B. Kirkbride School.
All three schools are currently working to engage the community in the process. Surveys have been released to ask a number of questions about what improvements you would like to see for the outdoor spaces at the schools.
Different concepts for the schoolyard are presented in the survey, ranging from outdoor classroom space to an orchard. You can fill out the survey relating to G.W. Childs School, Kirkbride and Girard.
Upcoming meetings for the project will further discuss the plans and unveil the progress so far.
I’d like to see some landscaping in and around the current concrete jungle that is Steven Girard. Looking north from 18th street there is no green space. How about planting some trees along the west side of 18th between WPA and Snyder?
I can not wait! I usually ride the 47 past McCall Elementary and they have a lovely urban garden and outdoor bench set up. I do want to praise the principal and the teachers for returning the school yard into what’s it’s meant to be, and not a parking lot
I’d like to see the basketball courts refurbished to look like respectable courts. Resurfaced.. Plexiglass backboards and new sturdy rims.. Accurately measured lines on the courts.
And yes, maybe more trees on the peripheral areas of the basketball court and yards. Yes.
