What community services would you like to see at Southwark Elementary and South Philly High?

Over the summer it was announced by the city that nine schools would be transformed into “community schools.” Not only would these buildings serve the educational purposes of the students, but they would begin to service the needs of the surrounding community.

Southwark Elementary and South Philadelphia High School are the two schools in these neighborhoods that were selected. To begin making these neighborhood improvements, a survey has been released to get the community to weigh in on what services would be beneficial to the area.

The survey lists 20 possibilities, including things like mental health services, arts opportunities, computer access, vision screenings and more. There are different surveys for parents, students and community members.

You can complete the survey here.

Before they discuss opening up South Philadelphia High to the community, they need to clean it up! It also needs some renovations…the last time I was in there, it was disgraceful!

They have two under- (rather, UN-)utilized lawns at SPHS; put a playground in one and a dog park in the other. Close off that weird subterraneran tunnel where junkies go to get their fix, and put some freaking trees in that barren concrete plaza. Then let neighborhood residents park in the lot from 5pm til 7am and shut these idiots up about Broad Street median parking. Boom, I just solved like five neighborhood problems.
