ACME is opening in the former ShopRite location in Snyder Plaza

ShopRite recently moved from Snyder Plaza to a larger location in Whitman Plaza, leaving Pennsport and Whitman-area residents with less grocery store options.

A new tenant has now been announced for ShopRite’s former location. In the summer of 2017, ACME will be opening in the storefront at 29 Snyder Ave.

In the coming months, ACME will be completely gutting the store for renovations. In addition to the normal grocery store products, expect to see a Starbucks, along with a beer and wine shop, within the building.

The Goldenberg Group is in the process of “reinventing” Snyder Plaza. With new retail options, bright new murals and more improvements to come, expect to see big changes at this shopping center. In the future the Goldenberg Group hopes to add more public spaces and walkways to better connect with the surrounding neighborhood.

Well this is a major bummer in my opinion. High prices, poor selection (except the occasional loaf of Liscio’s bread in the bakery section)…I’ll likely continue the trek down to Shop Rite and cross my fingers for something good in the Super Fresh space.

I had the dream too. Acme’s produce prices are ridiculous. Still hoping for Wegmans near Super Fresh Space.

I’m really surprised to see Acme moving into this spot; I would have expected them to snatch up the former Superfresh adjacent to Home Depot. This location could be a chance to really try something new, i.e. a prominent beer and wine selection with a huge prepared foods area and a respectable organic/local selection. They could really keep a lot of South Philadelphians from having to hit Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s. In any case, glad to see the building occupied!

ACME has gotten much better in recent years and is no longer the chain in decline with high prices and older locations that we remember. They have been undergoing a major expansion. Let’s see what happens here at this location.

I do hope that the Acme going in on Snyder Ave is a success. But it will also need to be extremely better than the Acme at 2nd & Girard, in my Northern Liberties neighborhood. I avoid it, to my own inconvenience, at all costs because it has terribly limited product selection, it is much more expensive than Shop Rite, the deli service and produce quality is very inconsistent. So much so that it is worth it to me to drive to the Cherry Hill Wegman’s, which I now do on a weekly basis. The NoLibs Acme has been a depressing disappointment imo.

Here’s hoping this comes with a repaving of the incredibly dangerous entrance to that parking lot. It’s bad in a car. It’s downright lethal on a bike, motorcycle, or scooter.

Nooo, why is Acme taking over? They are awful. Since Warner Bros shutdown and no one is buying giant anvils anymore they found a way to turn them into meat.

A well-known German DISCOUNT food chain named “Lidl”. pronounced “leedell” is negotiating for the Pier 70 Superfresh building. Lidl is even cheaper than ALDI. Better look out, stale ACME!

Glad to see someone take over the site and ACME to me is welcome to Pennsport. The ACME takeover of the horrendous Super Fresh at 10th and South and on 5th Street were a great improvement. As a resident of Pennsport I appreciate another grocer other than Wal-Mart. Not really sure why there’s so many negative comments – we need more shopping options in Pennsport and Whitman – no matter who it is. Sounds like a lot of sour grapes by people who probably don’t even live in the neighborhood.
