Lidl grocery store could be coming to Blatstein’s waterfront development

A German grocery store chain is looking to bring its stores to the Philadelphia-area, maybe even to Bart Blatstein’s planned waterfront development.

The discount grocery chain Lidl is in the process of acquiring locations throughout Philadelphia. While not confirmed, Lidl is being marketed as a potential tenant for Blatstein’s planned mixed-use project at 1401-99 Columbus Blvd.

From Philly.com:

Also, Lidl is portrayed in an online marketing presentation by brokerage MSC Retail as anchoring a retail-and-residential project proposed by developer Bart Blatstein along the Delaware River in South Philadelphia.

An earlier version of MSC’s plan for the retail space at the 21-acre site, where a Foxwoods casino had once been proposed, featured an Aldi supermarket rather than a Lidl.

Property records show no transactions at the site involving Lidl, which generally buys its own real estate rather than leasing space from landlords.

Maybe it’s just me, but I’d like to see ol’ Bart actually make demonstrable progress on just one of the “developments” he’s currently working in Philly. The former Inquirer building? Broad and Washington? C’mon Bart–FOCUS!!!!
