Passyunk Gardens Property Up For Sale

Since 2011, Passyunk Gardens has brought neighbors together through its urban gardening program. Maintained by volunteers, the community garden now faces an end as the land owners have decided to sell the property.

“We’re working on a possible solution to keep it a garden but don’t have anything to report as of yet, says Sarah Anton, Passyunk Square Civic. “The current owners would love to see it kept a garden, but really need to sell and are firm on their asking price as I understand it and it’s quite high. They’ve been keeping us in the loop about a course of the sale.”

Passyunk Gardens is located at the corner of East Passyunk Ave and Warton Street.

They really need to sell, yet are firm on an clearly over-inflated asking price?? Yeah….

BTW, the place is not, and has not been, maintained in over 3 years. It’s a weed farm.

Hey Lou – Have you been by the garden in the last 3 years? They are open every Sunday from May through the fall from 4-6pm for the public and neighbors to stop by, see the plants, ask garden questions, and harvest vegetables.

The garden is a tremendous neighborhood asset and I hope we all can find a way to preserve it.

I agree the garden is an asset. But it still needs quite a bit more upkeep. I walked past it on Saturday and thought it was abandoned.

Lou, I’m pretty sure you’re thinking of the wrong corner. But as Steve says – indeed we’re always looking for help at the Passyunk Gardens site. In fact, we have a work day this Saturday 9-1.

Um… sorry Sarah, but I can assure that after living in the neighborhood for almost 20 years, I friggin’ know what corner it is, and yes it looks abandoned. Maybe after this Saturday it will look better.

Ah ok! Probably won’t look that much different after Saturday – though we will probably be adding tomatoes and peppers, so some of the empty beds on E. Passyunk will get filled up. Maybe some of the things you think are weeds are actually there intentionally. Happy to give you a plant tour!

It’s a great corner, very well maintained and an asset to the neighborhood and anyone interested in gardening for sure. Got my cucumbers from there last year! Would be a shame to see it go.

I was wondering if maybe you could get Rachael Ray involved to save the garden. It would be so sad to lose this space.

She was there for the dedication, wasn’t she? They made such a big deal out of this-it was on the news, FYI Philly, etc…I assumed the property had been actually parcelled out to/by the city. It is very disappointing that they would have spent so much money and time, & made such a fuss over a property that could be sold out from under them the minute a greedy owner felt the whim.

Where’s the listing? What are they asking?
