Streets Department Announces East Passyunk Avenue Intersection Improvement Project
Philadelphia Street Department: Streets Commissioner Carlton Williams announced today that work will begin Tuesday, May 30th on the East Passyunk Avenue and 12th & Morris Streets Intersection Improvement Project. Construction will be performed in multiple phases and all modes of traffic will be continuously maintained, however, motorists are advised to allow for additional traveling time through the area.
The project is being sponsored by the City’s Commerce Department and involves improvements at the intersection of East Passyunk Avenue and 12th & Morris Streets. The improvements include, but are not limited to the replacement of sidewalk, installation of concrete bump outs and traffic islands, ADA curb ramps, replacement of streetlight arms, and traffic signal improvements. Additionally, there will be street improvement at the intersection including resurfacing as well as resetting manholes and utility boxes.
Construction is expected to be completed by fall 2017. The amount of the construction contract is $711,208.00 and it is being funded by the City Commerce Department and the Passyunk Avenue Revitalization Corporation (PARC).
The Streets Department thanks the citizens for their efforts and involvement during the design phase of this project. It also thanks citizens in advance for their patience and cooperation during the upcoming construction.

$700,000 Jesus Christ someone is keeping half of that…you could built 2-3 houses from scratch with that money…there’s no way it cost that much to pour concrete…I know a guy who would do it for a $2000 just saying
I gusee no one has noticed but the paint marks for the rebuilding have been down for over 3 weels. Is this good? There will be NO right turn allowed from passyunk to 12th st, and taking away few parking spot on the 1600 block is a bad idea. Also, a small island in the middle of the intersection? I can not wait to see how mant people hit it after a few inches of snow. If you drive this intersection you know how many people run the light by go around someone who has stoped it.
The spray paint implies that the turn WILL remain. Not sure where you see the turn being removed.
Also, no parking is being lost. There is one “illegal” spot that you won’t be able to park in any longer, but it was never legal in the first place.
I think the whole point of the project is to make the intersection safer (i.e. cars won’t be able to go around each other as they did before). The 2 new islands are safer for pedestrians, and the traffic lights are supposed to be improved as well.
Hello again, I have lived here since there was a horse trouft in the middle of the intersection where the island is going to go. I am pretty sure the turn on 12th is out unless you swing VERY wide.
OMG!!! Did you say a few parking spots will be gone!??? Also the island will stop people from illegally passing cars and dangerously blowing through the light, or the bump out will make it difficult to wildly make a u-turn onto 12th and almost kill pedestrians? Call the Police. This is outrageous.

There were two visions for the intersection – one that removed that sharp right turn from E. Passyunk to S 12th and one that kept it. The plan ultimately approved keeps the turn. But even if the turn had been removed, the solution for residents of S 12th between Morris and Mifflin would have been to travel north on 13th instead of E. Passyunk and make a right on Morris then a right on 12th. No big deal.
100% can confirm that the right-hand turn to 12th will remain.

One comment about the bump outs. These actually go into the street further than a parked car would and when riding a bike you don’t have the space to ride next to a moving vehicle. it gets very tight so be careful.
Its such a shame the decided to keep the 12th street turnaround. The intersection would have been better and safer without.
