News round-up

PlanPhilly reports that another Target may be coming to South Philly. The proposed development, at 5th and Bainbridge streets in Queen Village, calls for a seven-story mixed-use building anchored by a store “with a big red bull’s eye.”  While the prospective plans will please some, we’ll be sad if this handsome little building bites the dust.

The construction underway at Guerin Recreation Center, 16th and Jackson Streets, is part of the Philadelphia Water Department’s Green City, Clean Waters program, reports the South Philly Review. Two underground storage basins are being installed beneath the site to collect storm runoff diverted from the center and surrounding streets.  The area above the basins will be planted with grass when complete.

The self-piloting drone of the future is under development in South Philadelphia, reports 6abc. The drone is being developed by Exyn Technologies, 2118 Washington Avenue, and a team from the University of Pennsylvania. The group hopes the drone can be used to explore disaster zones, inaccessible areas, underground mines, and underwater.

6abc also highlighted three new “spots for Southern cooking,” two of which are South Philly-based.  Acadia, 824 S. 8th Street and Mike’s BBQ, 1703 S. 11th St. are both featured in the piece.  The channel also praised Mike’s BBQ in a separate piece on sandwiches.
