Spring Into Brunch

By Catherine Murray

With warm and sunny weather just around the corner, we want to share some of our favorite brunch spots in South Philly that are the perfect places to reemerge from your weekend hibernation. In no particular order, here’s where we are brunching these days.

Cafe Y Chocolate

A treasured staple west of Broad, Cafe Y Chocolate serves Mexican brunch with layered and rich flavors. Start off with a Oaxacan hot chocolate with spices, cinnamon, and your milk of choice including whole, coconut, or soy. Add a shot of La Colombe espresso and make it a cafe con chocolate for a much needed morning boost. If you want to start your party off in the morning (or extend it from the night before), bring you own bubbly or tequila and Cafe Y Chocolate will provide juice or margarita mixes. Cafe Y Chocolate offers options for meat lovers, vegetarians, and vegans alike. Dig into dishes of huevos rancheros, chilaquiles with red, green, or mole sauce, and perfectly-made churros.

Pistolas Del Sur

For brunch along East Passyunk Avenue, check out Pistolas. Enjoy breakfast burritos, pork roll egg & cheese, and and Pantacos De Drizzle – crepe-like, slightly crunchy pancakes with sausage, eggs, and spicy maple syrup. For those who believe taco time is all the time, Pistolas also offers its full menu all day. Menu items are made to order, which makes it easy to adapt dishes to vegan, vegetarian, or gluten free. When the weather cooperates, or if you’re brave enough to endure the last of the winter chill, bring along the pup and sit outside on the patio.

Pistola’s Del Sur

Acadia

For a taste of New Orleans, head to Bella Vista to enjoy the bountiful brunch options at Acadia. Need some hair of the dog to get over the final round from last night? Order one of the speciality cocktails ranging from bottomless mimosas, hurricanes, or speciality cocktails including the Moulin Rouge (vodka, muddled strawberries, sugar, and lemon). Acadia is a great place to take your gluten free friend or vegetarian visiting from out of town – it has clear menu labeling and several of its decadent dishes are made without meat or gluten.
