Get saucy this weekend!

Ten homemade gravies (that’s red sauce, to you) from South Philly home cooks will be available for tasting at the East Passyunk Crossing Civic Association’s fifth annual Red Gravy Cook-off. The tasting, followed by a pasta dinner, takes place this Sunday, March 31st, 2019, from 4-6 p.m. at Ss. Neumann-Goretti High School, 1736 South 10th Street. A $20 ticket gets you entry to this popular local event celebrating the Italian-American heritage of the neighborhood.

Record your tasting notes while you sample the gravies and then vote for the Crowd Favorite. Local luminaries including Mama Maria, Senator Larry Farnese, State Rep Elizabeth Fiedler, and Councilman Mark Squilla will award the Judges’ Choice prize. Winners of each award will receive $200.

Last year, Gray’s Ferry resident Laura Valenti was the first double-victor in the competition’s history, taking home both prizes.

The price of admission features:

  • samples of each competing sauce
  • a full serving of your top choice over macaroni cooked by Mama Maria
  • vegan meatballs from Triangle Tavern
  • bread from New York Bakery
  • salad
  • beverages including cold-brew coffee from Rival Brothers
  • a homemade dessert buffet

Guests 21 and over can sample wine from Chaddsford Winery. Additional glasses and bottles will be available for purchase. There will also be a 50/50 raffle.

Children 12 and under are free. Buy tickets here, they’re selling fast!
