J Squared Salon takes over the former Carolina’s at 12th and Tasker

East Passyunk has a new spot where the whole family can get their hair did – J Squared Salon on the corner of 12th and Tasker.

Friends Jennifer Candelora and Jennifer Marasa open their doors Nov. 1, three months after the former tenant, Carolina’s Hair Studio, went out of business.

That’s Candelora on the left and Marasa on the right.

Marasa, who lives around the corner at 13th and Dickinson, said choosing this neighborhood was a no-brainer.

Redesign being proposed for Washington Ave. may make it become less chaotic

A new roadway design could be coming to Washington Avenue that would make the street safer for pedestrians and bicyclists.

Members of the public will be able to see the road configurations and give input at a public meeting  from 6 to 7:30 p.m. tomorrow night, Wednesday Oct. 23 at the Mummers Museum at 2nd and Washington.

The City Planning Commission will present its Washington Avenue Roadway Design Study at the meeting. Other topics up for discussion are traffic enforcement and safety, as well as parking and loading conditions (who hasn’t been stuck behind a truck unloading crabs or vegetables around 9th Street?).

Developer proposes 16 apartments for King of Jeans building at EPX zoning meeting

A developer presented his proposal last night for the King of Jeans building at 1843 E. Passyunk Ave. to the East Passyunk Crossing zoning committee. The plan includes 16 apartments – eight one-bedroom units and eight two-bedroom units. That’s a total 24 bedrooms.

The man behind the plan is Andy Kaplan of Rockland Capital, a former real estate attorney turned commercial real estate developer. His past projects include the shopping center anchored by Ikea on Columbus Boulevard and a commercial project anchored by a Lowe’s at 52nd and Jefferson in West Philadelphia, which he said transformed that blighted area.

This is owner Cara Frank’s second location. She opened Six Fishes Healing Arts at 750 S. 15th St. seven years ago, and she said she felt inspired to open a second location in the rapidly growing Triangles section of Graduate Hospital.
