First Pics: Inside the new Dolphin Tavern

Step inside the newly re-opened Dolphin Tavern on Broad and Tasker streets, and darkness envelopes you as the door swings shut behind you.

After the first couple blinks, the place gives way to a strangely similar, yet somehow fresh-looking decor with the long bar surrounded by stools, wood paneling, and portraits of vintage burlesque dancers lining the walls.

Did we mention it was really dark in there?

Tiny Schell Street seeing big development

Well, it’s big for how small Schell Street is. Schell is a tiny wisp of an alley between 9th and Darien streets, and the 900 block of it will be home to at least three fancy new houses.

The home at 900 S. Schell St. backs up to Italian Market businesses on 9th and on Christian. Construction has begun on it and permits were recently filed for another at 906, and there’s a hole in the ground at 904. Across Schell at 901 and 903, it appears that site prep has begun for two more.

According to the real estate listing for 900, the three buildings are an “ultra chic construction” with “high-end finishes” such as granite counter tops and hardwood floors.

Being located right off of the Italian Market doesn’t hurt either.

Come have Spirits & Suds with Santa on Passyunk

Whether you’re looking to get into the holiday spirit, or just looking to tie one on and forget about the holidays altogether, East Passyunk Ave’s Spirits and Suds Bar Crawl tomorrow night will easily fulfill both needs.

Much like the Halloween themed Witch CRAFT Beer Crawl held back in October, 12 bars along Passyunk will be featuring $3 seasonal craft beers, $4 holiday cocktails, and select bars will be providing $5 appetizers/small plates. You also get an elf hat and a stamp card. After collecting five stamps by buying food or drink from different bars, you’re entered for a chance to win $300 worth of gift certificates and other prizes.
The bars include old favorites like the P.O.P.E., Cantina, and Stogie Joe’s, along with newcomers Stateside, Noir, Bottle Shop and a bunch more. Cocktails and food specials include:  Jolly Pumpkin Noel beer and BBQ Pork Rillettes at Stateside, Cranberry-Ginger Margaritas at Cantina, Sly Fox Christmas Ale at Lucky 13, Wilma’s Smokey Deviled Eggs at the P.O.P.E. and a Black Cherry Eggnog at Noir.
The event, sponsored by the EPABID, runs tomorrow from 5:30 to 10 p.m. Drinkers, er, participants can purchase a $5 ticket at Urban Jungle, or for advance tickets, click here.

What's Happening in:  Newbold

Perfect timing for Newbold Neighbors to meet at Hardena restaurant

So, last night. you may have heard about this guy who did a travel show about Philly (Anthony Bourdain, first episode of “The Layover”). He happened to mention, among probably two dozen other suggestions, to check out Hardena, at 1754 Hicks Street, around the corner from the South Philadelphia Tap Room. Well, you can check this one off your list this week and support a good cause at the same time.

The Newbold Neighbors Association is hosting a restaurant night/fundraiser at Hardena on Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. And if Bourdain plus meeting your neighbors aren’t enough, the restaurant has gotten some of the best reviews on Yelp that we’ve ever seen.

Tickets are $15 per person, and you get to enjoy delicious Indonesian cuisine along with the chance to win awesome raffle prizes. The NNA recommends that you bring a take-out container, because seating space will be limited. A portion of the ticket price will help fund the NNA’s efforts in the neighborhood.
