Passyunk Square Civic Association to celebrate 10-year anniversary

It’s been a busy decade for the Passyunk Square Civic Association, and the group is ready to celebrate with a “warm” reception. Literally.

In honor of its 10th year in operation, the PSCA will hold an anniversary celebration Dec. 3 at Annunciation BVM Church(10th and Dickinson streets) from 7 to 9 p.m. The group promises a night of fun, food and drinks, but also touts a nobler cause, namely a winter clothing drive for the less-privileged kids of South Philly.

PSCA 10 years

So, come out and celebrate the association’s accomplishments since 2003, like the planting of approximately 1,000 trees in the neighborhood, the recycling of 19,000 tons of e-waste (that’s discarded electronic junk to you), and helping Passyunk Square become Curbed Philly’s Neighborhood of the Year earlier this year.

South Philly High hits first fundraising goal for green roof, wants more input

The people of South Philly High have one question for you:  Are you ready to raise money to help them raze their roof?

That’s actually an oversimplification (and corny, yes): The school’s true project is to transform its campus into a community green space that will pull double duty as an outdoor classroom and neighborhood park. The signature feature is a green roof that we told you about back in February.

With help from the Lower Moyamensing Civic Association, Southern — which already boasts an impressive community garden — launched a greening master plan earlier this year and has received an outpouring of support and encouragement from the surrounding community. The project has raised $27,350, surpassing its first financial goal. Now, the school and its partners want to share the project’s progress with, and garner feedback from,  the people who will eventually be using the green space.

A fact of life, courtesy of the Passyunk Post: The best way to lubricate the wheels of neighborly socializing is with alcohol. So, what better way to meet the fine folks in Newbold and Point Breeze than with food and drink, served in the comfort of neighborhood homes?

The Newbold Neighbors Association will be hosting its annual Beer Tour on Saturday Oct. 26,  starting at 5 p.m.

During the, um, “living room crawl,” participating homeowners within the civic’s boundaries (Broad to 18th, Washington to Passyunk) will open their abodes to the tour, serving up a variety of entrees and desserts to pair with seasonal beers. It’s two brews per house and about an hour per visit is the general distribution.

You can check out the stellar beer list here, which includes this writer’s personal favorite brew from Philadelphia Brewing Company, the Joe Coffee Porter, and the crazy-strong Sixpoint Bengali Tiger (it’ll make you roar.)
