First Pics: Inside the new Dolphin Tavern

Step inside the newly re-opened Dolphin Tavern on Broad and Tasker streets, and darkness envelopes you as the door swings shut behind you.

After the first couple blinks, the place gives way to a strangely similar, yet somehow fresh-looking decor with the long bar surrounded by stools, wood paneling, and portraits of vintage burlesque dancers lining the walls.

Did we mention it was really dark in there?

First Pics: The Igloo yogurt shop to celebrate opening with free stuff

The Igloo (2223 Grays Ferry Avenue) will be throwing a grand opening on Saturday, making it Graduate Hospital’s first frozen dessert destination. And they’ll give away samples.

The brick facade belies the futuristic inside

The interior of the shop, which is situated on that little triangle where Gray’s Ferry, 23rd and South streets meet, is ultra modern with giant flat screen menu boards and faux igloo-style ice blocks encasing the frozen yogurt. There are also Italian sorbet taps and gumball machine-esque topping dispensers on the wall.

The term “general store” certainly describes the vibe in that you can get just about anything in the small corner grocery, from sandwiches and quinoa pasta to diapers and cleaning products.

We told a couple months back that it would be organic grocer (we put the over-under on opening at March 15, off by only three days). But some commenters who worried that it might cannibalize from Green Aisle around the corner need not be worried. The store has lots of room to grow if it’s going to be considered an organic grocer. So far, there’s a decent selection of produce, local honeys and a couple shelves of green or organic products.

First Pics: Cousin’s Grubhouse opens with new owners on West Passyunk

Cousin’s Grubhouse on West Passyunk Ave re-opened last Wednesday with new owners, Jim Lord and William Schmidt. The reboot brings a fancy new menu featuring innovative diner fare to the place, which has been running out of that corner since 1955.

The owners say the menu will continue to evolve and offer more creative things, but they’ve already put some interesting items among the regular breakfast and lunch offerings. In addition to standard eggs and pancakes, there’s the Grubhouse Big Philly Omelette with steak, scrapple and pork roll, and Salted Caramel French Toast.

Buttercream Cupcake opens on Moyamensing in Pennsport

Buttercream Cupcake opened its brick and mortar store last week and threw a party for itself with bourbon and free cupcakes on Saturday. Quite a mix.

The store, which we told you about in December, is at 2015 E. Moyamensing Ave. Owner/baker Kate Carrara launched the truck in mid-2009 and quickly made Buttercream a staple in the Philadelphia food truck scene.  It was voted Best Food Truck in 2010.
