Contest ends tomorrow, Dec. 18 – enter today or vote on the current entries.

Dickinson Square West Civic Association (DSWCA) is hosting the neighborhood’s second annual holiday house decorating contest – and you have one day left to enter and/or vote on your favorite entry.

The group invites neighbors living between Washington and Snyder, 4th and 6th Streets to enter by sending a clear, evening photo of their decorated house, along with their name and address, to info@dswca.org.

DSWCA will post all submitted photos on the Dickinson Square West Facebook page in a photo album titled “Holiday House Decorating Contest 2018.”

On December 18, DSWCA will select winners based on the number of likes each entry receives on Facebook. Winners will be announced on their Facebook page. The top three houses will receive prizes

South Philly’s ‘Secret’ Parks, Gardens & Green Spaces

Julian Abele Park, 22nd and Carpenter Streets. Photo by Friends of Julian Abele Park.

Now that Spring is finally here you might be looking for a quiet green space where you can enjoy the sunshine.  Curbed Philly posted a great list of 25 ‘secret’ parks and green spaces in the city.  South Philly was represented by eight sites from six neighborhoods:

We can think of a few ‘extra-secret’ South Philly spots missing from the list:

  • Ridgway Park tucked behind CAPA at 13th & Carpenter in Hawthorne, with its wonderful shade trees, a playground and a pool.
  • Mollbore Terrace – actually two separate green spaces located between Oregon Avenue and Johnston Street, 10th and 13th Streets.
  • Weinberg Park – a tiny green triangle on the border of Lower Moyamensing and Whitman.
  • Moyamensing Avenue medians – this linear green space divides Moyamensing Ave. from 15th to 20th.

Can you think of others?  Let us know in the comments below, and check out Curbed Philly’s piece here.

Traffic cones are used for plenty of things in South Philly, as the PPD’s “no savesies” efforts during the winter months have shown. But have you ever seen a pothole being filled with a traffic cone still inside of it?

Dickinson Square ‘not the best viable option for a dog run’ according to Parks and Rec

The dog run under I-95 may be taking steps in the right direction, but the other proposed Pennsport dog space may have reached the end of its course.

Dickinson Square Park

We’ve been following the plans for this dog-specific space for Dickinson Square from the survey that was initially released, to a public meeting that brought out the vocal non-supporters in May. Park and Recreation has now decided that Dickinson Square Park is “not the best viable option for a dog run.”
