Vare-Washington to see $100,000 in improvements for United Way Day of Service in September

Southwark Elementary isn’t the only area school seeing some big improvements.

Vare-Washington, located at 1198 S. 5th St., has been chosen as a location for the United Way Day of Service in September. With the honor of hosting this service day comes the receipt of funding for $100,000 for improvements to the school and over 300 volunteers for the event in September.

Dickinson Square dog run meeting shows neighborhood disapproval, surveys show positive support

On Tuesday evening, Dickinson Square West Civic Association hosted a meeting to present the pros and cons of creating a dog run at Dickinson Square.

Despite the positive support the project has received from an online survey created months ago, the meeting took a different tone. The presentation of the dog park brought out the vocal non-supporters at the meeting of between 60 and 70 individuals.

Mt. Sinai development being called Southwark on Reed, a look at updated renderings

Demolition is still continuing on Mt. Sinai at 4th and Reed. While the site isn’t ready for construction just yet, we have a new look at what to expect of this development.

A total of 95 townhomes are set to be built in this project being called Southwark on Reed.

The end of Mt. Sinai

It’s been a long process for Mt. Sinai. The former hospital was shuttered 19 years ago and since then, plans have shifted to various forms of redevelopment before to landing on the current plans for the site at 4th and Reed.

As the building is reaching end-stages of demolition, the plans for the 95 townhomes to be built on the site of this long-standing structure lingers. The changes happening here show “the vulnerability of broad-shouldered architecture to real estate development on the quick.”
