Lucia is celebrated in Sweden every year on December 13 (mind you – American Swedish Historical Musuem’s celebration however is on Saturday, December 7). The Lucia Fest includes a performance with a young lady in a white gown, entering in the dark with candles in her hair, accompanied by attendants, and sometimes also by star boys, “tomtar” (gnomes) and “pepparkaksgubbar” (ginger bread cookies) and they all sing traditional Swedish Lucia songs. These performances take place in churches, at home, in daycare, in parks – well, everywhere really – and are enjoyed together with gingerbread cookies, saffron buns and “glögg” (similar to mulled wine).
