Lou Boquila receives two bells for ‘rediscover[ing] his roots and redefin[ing] himself dish by dish’ at Perla

In August Perla opened its doors across from the Singing Fountain, bringing some added diversity in dining options to East Passyunk Avenue. Now that the restaurant has been open for a few months, Craig Laban stopped in to review Perla, giving it two bells.


Owner and chef Lou Boquila received praise from Craig Laban for a number of elements of the restaurant, but ultimately Laban thinks that, “Boquila may well need to dive deeper into tradition and master those flavors first, before he can truly move forward.” The restaurant is an ode to Boquila’s late-mother and combines versions of dishes she used to prepare with more modern elements.

What's Happening in:  Passyunk Square 

Perla is planning to open later this week

East Passyunk Avenue has been seeing some added diversity lately, with the addition of Sate Kampar, a Lebanese restaurant planning for a September opening and a Filipino restaurant called Perla that we’ve been talking about since September.


Perla is finally getting ready to open. This new 30-seat restaurant across from the singing fountain is expected to open on Thursday, August 18.

You’ll no longer be able to visit South Philly Barbacoa on weekdays

When South Philly Barbacoa first opened in a storefront at 1703 S. 11th St., the hours were limited to just weekends. A short time later, the shop expanded to weekday hours.

Despite the taqueria’s popularity, having just been named one of the best new restaurants in the country, they have decided to revert back to being opened only on weekends.

South Philly Barbacoa makes Bon Appétit’s list of ‘Best New Restaurants’

It has now been a year since South Philly Barbacoa made the move from a small-but-popular food cart to a brick-and-mortar storefront in East Passyunk Crossing.

The Mexican restaurant from Christina Martinez and Ben Miller is now being called one of the country’s best new restaurants from Bon Appétit magazine. South Philly Barbacoa made the list of 50, along with Fishtown-based Wm. Mulherin’s Sons.

La Fusion open in new 11th and Washington location

La Fusion restaurant has moved from 15th and Oregon to a new location in the shopping plaza at 11th and Washington.


Owner Yenh Thivarath previously told us that the Asian restaurant was on the move because of parking problems at its former location. The restaurant has now opened in a second floor spot in a shopping center with a parking lot.
