Lou Boquila receives two bells for ‘rediscover[ing] his roots and redefin[ing] himself dish by dish’ at Perla

In August Perla opened its doors across from the Singing Fountain, bringing some added diversity in dining options to East Passyunk Avenue. Now that the restaurant has been open for a few months, Craig Laban stopped in to review Perla, giving it two bells.

Owner and chef Lou Boquila received praise from Craig Laban for a number of elements of the restaurant, but ultimately Laban thinks that, “Boquila may well need to dive deeper into tradition and master those flavors first, before he can truly move forward.” The restaurant is an ode to Boquila’s late-mother and combines versions of dishes she used to prepare with more modern elements.

Perla is planning to open later this week

East Passyunk Avenue has been seeing some added diversity lately, with the addition of Sate Kampar, a Lebanese restaurant planning for a September opening and a Filipino restaurant called Perla that we’ve been talking about since September.

Perla is finally getting ready to open. This new 30-seat restaurant across from the singing fountain is expected to open on Thursday, August 18.

Building owner presents loose plan for restaurant across from fountain at 1535 S. 11th St.

Both the building owner and architect of a potential restaurant project across the street from the fountain at 1535 S. 11th St.  gave an information-only proposal last night at the Passyunk Square Civic Association’s zoning committee meeting. Their plan is to develop the currently vacant property between Fond and Da Vinci’s into a sit-down eating establishment, likely a BYOB, and convert the second and third floors into a bilevel apartment with a roof deck.

But what kind of restaurant? They still don’t know.
