Queen of Jeans art installation put up on fencing surrounding former King of Jeans building

Now that the King of Jeans building has been demolished and the sign has found a home at Provenance Salvage in Northern Liberties, street artist Kid Hazo and South Fellini art studio have collaborated on an art installation which parodies the original sign.

Instead of the King of Jeans, they have created the Queen of Jeans—allowing a woman to take reign over East Passyunk Avenue.

Demolition beginning on King of Jeans building

The King of Jeans sign was removed in February and fencing popped up around the location about a month ago, so it was only a matter of time until the demolition began on the former King of Jeans building at 1843 E. Passyunk Ave.

The demolition began on Monday for the construction of a 59-foot, five-story building in its place.

Demolition finally set to begin on old King of Jeans building

Fencing has sprouted up around the old King of Jeans building, which — if you can believe it — we told you nearly three years ago that it would be torn down to make way for a new apartment building on the site.

About time, right?

About time, right?

That means demolition is about to get underway 1843 E. Passyunk Ave., and a new 59-foot, five-story building will rise in its place, according the the plans approved back in February 2014 by the Zoning Board of Adjustment.

King of Jeans sign being removed today, to be displayed at Provenance Salvage in NoLibs

Update: This post has been updated to include a statement from East Passyunk Crossing Civic Association’s zoning chair, David Goldfarb.

We’ve been following the King of Jeans building development for years and it appears that it is now officially the end of an era for the building. At about 11 a.m. this morning, we were informed that the sign is in the process of being taken down.

Goldfarb said in his statement that the sign will find a new home at Provenance Salvage in Northern Liberties.

What's Happening in:  East Passyunk Crossing 

King of Jeans plans OK’d by ZBA; 59-foot building to rise in its place

Developer Andy Kaplan has been approved to complete the apartment/office building on the site of the current King of Jeans building.

The Zoning Board of Adjustment granted the approval today during a rare reconsideration hearing after denying another version of the application at a previous appeal hearing in November.

The decision clears the way for Kaplan to demolish the current structure and build a 59-foot, five-story building with about 3,000 square feet of retail on the first floor, office space on the second floor and 12 apartments on the remaining three floors.
