  • An apartment project proposed three years ago may be getting underway at 18th and Washington now that a demolition notice has appeared on the building, reports Naked Philly. The 2011 proposal by the Carosella Brothers of C&R Building Supply, surely outdated by now, called for 15 apartments, ground-floor commercial and basement parking accessed by a far lift.
  • Construction on the 75-home development on a vacant Columbus Boulevard lot bordered by Catharine Street and the I-95 Washington Avenue off-ramp has begun, says Plan Philly. Earth movers were spotted leveling the ground to create a terraced base for the project above the flood plain.

First Pics: The Pharmacy coffee shop/cafe opens at 18th and Wharton

A new coffee shop/gallery/music venue called The Pharmacy opened this month in a part of the neighborhood that could really use a coffee shop.

The Pharmacy opened last week, and it's unique for its art shows and live bands.

The Pharmacy, a coffee shop, not a prescription-dispensing place, also offers art shows and live bands.

Owner Gary Viteri said he opened The Pharmacy at  1300 S. 18th St. with the idea of bringing the community together through art and music as well as coffee, pastries, bagels and a handful of other breakfast and lunch items, many of them vegan. Check out the full menu here.

So, why this name? Before Viteri occupied the space, the building served as a medical office. The main room was a waiting room and there was a pharmacy behind the building where a doctor was selling illegal prescriptions, he said. The medical office was shut down and the building went to sheriff sale.

ASB owner John Longacre had to endure two hearings before the Zoning Board of Adjustment and some nasty battles with a few neighbors before finally getting approval at the end of February for a patio, which he said will “distinguish the American Sardine Bar from every other bar in the city.
