First Pics: Samwich opening soon at 6th and Catharine

When Square Pie announced their move from the small location at 6th and Catharine to the larger, former Cochon location across the street, the owners of Northern Liberties restaurant Suppa jumped on the opportunity.

In November they announced a new restaurant, called Samwich, that would be opening in this location. Now the restaurant is almost ready to open, likely by the end of the week, pending the results of their upcoming inspection.

What's Happening in:  Queen Village 

Cochon now closed, to be replaced by Square Pie

Back in November, Square Pie opened in the former Blue Belly BBQ location at 600 Catharine St. While the pizza may be great, that location has its limitations with its lack of space.

To expand Square Pie, owners Gene and Amy Giuffi have decided to close down their French BYOB, Cochon, and move Square Pie to this bigger location at 801 E. Passyunk Ave.

Cochon owner to open Square Pie in former Blue Belly BBQ space at 6th & Catharine

The tiny Blue Belly corner storefront at 600 Catharine St. will soon be home to a pizza place called Square Pie.

The Insider reports that the owner, Gene Giuffi, who also owns the BYOB Cochon around the corner, comes from a Brooklyn family of pizza makers, so he settled on that as he was trying to come up with a new concept for the shuttered barbecue joint.

Has Blue Belly BBQ bitten the dust? Yes (updated)

Could the absence of the smoky smell of barbecuing meat wafting down 6th Street signal the demise of Blue Belly BBQ at 600 Catharine St.?

Butcher paper is up in the windows and there are dead plants inside.

We emailed them the see what’s up but haven’t heard back. The restaurant’s phone message says they would be closed from March 19 to April 1 for vacation.  That’s a bit long to extend a vacation.

UPDATE: We heard back this morning from co-owner Amy Giuffi:

We have decided to close.  We are considering reconceptualizing. Generally speaking, we were busy on weekend dinners,  but lunch and weekdays never got going to the degree we had needed to hit enough volume.
