Pancho’s Grill has opened, sort of, at 7th and Passyunk

The slivered-pie-slice of a building at 7th and Passyunk now houses Pancho’s Grill, which opened last month with irregular hours and no liquor license.

The awnings are a nice touch.

The restaurant is from the owner of the Baja Room/Pico de Gallo, which closed at 15th and South a few months back. It actually posted the same drink menu in the window.

SoPhilly Spotlight: Graffiti Homage edition

Yes, it’s weird to pick a SoPhilly Spotlight  because of it’s garage, but this one at 1412 S 7th St. is pretty cool. It’s also in a converted building that we called a graffiti museum when we wrote about the project back in April. Turns out, they like the graffiti and kept it for the heated garage.

It doesn’t hurt that the rest of the 2-bedroom loft apartment, unit 7 of the building, is super cool, even though it has the same kitchen as almost every other  new construction project on the market. It’s going for a cool $1,650 a month.

Link Love: Crash at Pat’s and other cheesesteak news; Jackson gets more attention; facade-less no more?

  • We knew that cheesesteaks were hazardous to your health, but this is ridiculous. A driver jumped the curb on Passyunk just north of Wharton at about 2 a.m. yesterday and slammed into a bunch of cars parked at Pat’s, NBC10 reported. No one was injured, though.

  • Good thing the crash didn’t happen during daylight hours yesterday, when the area was mobbed, at times blocking 9th and Passyunk completely, with steak aficionados who were lining up for 50 cent cheesesteaks at Geno’s in honor of that shop’s 47th anniversary.

Different outcomes for 2 proposals exhibit life without a civic association

Work has begun on a four-unit apartment building at 2008-2010 S. 8th St., on the border of the East Passyunk Crossing Civic Association‘s turf. But that’s actually only part of the story.

The real story is how this project contrasts so sharply with one less than two blocks away, at 1939 S. 7th St., which we wrote about in April.

2008-2010 is only two of the three lots. Shame they couldn't do all three at the same time.

2008-2010 S. 8th St., which is two of the three lots pictured. Shame they didn’t do all three at once.

On 8th, the developer went before the EPX zoning committee in April 2012 with a request for six units. Four were approved.

They actually added bars to the windows. Doesn't inspire confidence.

7th and McKean, where they actually added bars to the windows. Doesn’t inspire confidence.

On 7th Street, there was no registered community organization to present to. That was why we called 7th and McKean – between EPX, Pennsport, Dickinson Square West, Lomo and Whitman civics – a civic no-man’s land.
