Blue Corn restaurant at 940 S. 9th St. isn’t all that new of an establishment, having opened in the Italian Market over two years ago, but the Inquirer‘s food critic has just now paid the restaurant a visit.

First Pics: New Mexican place Blue Corn aims high in Italian Market

Less than two months after the short-lived Torero tapas place closed at 940 S. 9th St., a new Mexican spot called Blue Corn has taken its place.

Blue Corn co-owner Amado Sandoval says he is aiming for a higher standard of Mexican fare than the numerous other establishments along the Italian Market strip. He says his menu features dishes that would be likely to be found in a sophisticated Mexico City restaurant rather than a streetside taco stand. Everything is handmade, and the staff — actually, it’s an all-family affair — shops daily for fresh ingredients.

Italian Market’s Torero tapas bar closes after just five months

The tapas place called Torero, which brought a shot of late-night life into the Italian Market when it opened in December, has already closed.

Adios, amigo.

The security grate was rolled down during its posted hours last week and its Yelp entry says the restaurant has “moved” to Upper Darby. It seems that it actually merged with a restaurant there called Tabblon. Too bad, since it was getting great reviews on Yelp as recently as two weeks ago.

First Pics: Torero tapas and paella bar opens in Italian Market

Torero Bar, the tapas place that we told you this week would be opening soon at 940 S 9th St. in the Italian Market, has already opened with an expansive menu that includes much more than just tapas – and one helluva happy hour.

Torero replaces El Costeno

Chef Miguel Martí Rossello, who was most recently chef at Mixto in Center City, drew from his heritage growing up on the Catalan-speaking island of Mallorca off Spain’s Mediterranean coast. There’s a section on the menu of traditional tapas like patatas bravas and garlic shrimp and sliced meats including jamon iberico. But there is also a large selection of meat and fish entrees (and some really unfortunate misspellings) on the menu: langostinos, skirt steak, octopus, cod, lamb. Brunch will also be served, starting at 10 a.m. on weekends.

Kitchen is open till 10 p.m. nightly, but a rotating roster of pinxtos (Basque word for tapas) and the full bar will be served till 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights. Full menu is below.
