Via Bicycle relocating to Broad and Bainbridge

Via Bicycle has been located at 606 S. 9th St. for 20 years. The long-standing bicycle shop is about to make a big change, with the relocation of the shop and owner Curtis Anthony’s vintage bike collection.

In the spring, Via will be opening in a new location at Broad and Bainbridge, according to Newsworks.

Third generation D’Angelo Bros. meat shop expected to close at the end of the month

Since 1910, D’Angelo’s Bros. Specialty Meat shop has been an Italian Market fixture. With no successor in line to take over the business for 67-year-old Sonny D’Angelo, it is time to say goodbye to the long-standing business.

No BID for the Italian Market

A Business Improvement District has been in the works for the Italian Market for years now, but as of a vote this week, the proposal is officially dead in the water.

Over one third of the businesses along the 9th Street commercial corridor voted against the formation of this BID, which would have brought streetscape improvements and more funding to the longest standing outdoor market in the country.

Italian Market ‘Stock Exchange’ functions as public art

Artist Jon Rubin, in collaboration with the Mural Arts Program, is dreaming up public art in a new way. From now through December 7, select businesses in the Italian Market will be collaborating by exchanging items to sell in each other’s stores.

These participating businesses include more recent immigrants and more established stores “that operate in close proximity to each other but are often separated by cultural and socioeconomic differences.”

Torta shop from South Philly Barbacoa opening later this month

South Philly Barbacoa recently cut back its hours to weekends-only, which was a disappointment to many customers of the highly-praised restaurant.


Soon you’ll be able to enjoy tortas on weekdays again from co-owner of South Philly Barbacoa, Christina Martinez, and her son, Isaias Berriozabal. Their new shop, called El Compadre, is expected to open in the former Los Taquitos de Puebla location at 1149 S. 9th St. on October 24.
