ACME is opening in the former ShopRite location in Snyder Plaza

ShopRite recently moved from Snyder Plaza to a larger location in Whitman Plaza, leaving Pennsport and Whitman-area residents with less grocery store options.

Oregon Avenue ACME now sells wine

You’ll no longer need to take a separate trip to the liquor store if you’re hoping to buy a bottle of wine getting your groceries at one South Philly supermarket. Now that PA law allows grocery stores to sell wine, a local ACME is getting in on the fun.

If you take a trip to the store at 19th and Oregon, you’ll be greeted by a selection of wines, in addition to the already-existing beer selection.

We all know and love East Passyunk for the rich restaurant scene and thriving local businesses. But did you know that an East Passyunk woman is responsible for Sinatra’s nickname (according to legend, anyway), or that a prison once occupied the land where you shop for groceries?

Acme at 19th and Oregon unveils beer section with frosted mugs

There’s finally an explanation for that orange liquor license application at the 19th and Oregon Acme that we reported about way back in October — it’s a beer cafe and six-pack shop, the first that we know of in the city.

Dan Croce, Acme’s vice president of operations, told us they’re selling about 400 varieties of beer, of which you can buy up to two six packs at a time (just like takeout beer at a bar). Or you can have a seat at the new cafe with a frosted mug and grub from the grocery store or a small menu.

UPDATED: Huh? Acme removes its self-checkout aisles

UPDATE: Dennis Clark, Acme’s VP of marketing and merchandising, tells us the self-checkouts were removed to improve service, but getting rid of them was only half the battle.

“The reason is to improve customer service by having more interaction with customers and to be able to help them through the checkout process,” Clark said. The second half is increasing the number of checkers. “Our commitment is to man the store appropriately at the checkouts and move people through quickly.”

Clark noted that the change was part of a large remodel that includes improving the produce section, adding more natural products, increasing the number of frozen items and lowering prices, as well as cosmetic updates to the decor. A ribbon-cutting for the improved store is scheduled for 9 a.m. Friday, March 28.

Where the self-checkouts used to be.

We emailed a corporate spokeswoman late last night and haven’t yet heard back on what the rationale would be. We can’t imagine.
