Hawthornes owners to match soda tax revenue to donate to Andrew Jackson School

The newly-implemented soda tax has outraged many with the increased prices on not just soda, but also other sugary beverages in the city.

Not everyone is getting mad about the tax, though. Local restaurant owners Chris Fetfatzes and Heather Annechiarico of Hawthornes are making the tax a bigger initiative to raise money for the Andrew Jackson School.

Andrew Jackson Elementary teacher receives the ‘Oscar of teaching’

A normal Wednesday morning turned into the surprise of a lifetime for an Andrew Jackson Elementary school teacher.

The Milken Foundation held an assembly to award 29-year-old Jayda Pugliese, a 5th grade science and math teacher at the school, with the honor that some call the “Oscar of Teaching.”

South Philly schools seeing continued increase in enrollment

Three South Philly recently ranked among the best in the city, showing some of the strong points in the education system in the city.

While many schools are doing very well, others in the Philadelphia School District have rapidly growing enrollment rates, with some schools even reaching capacity. Schools like Jackson and Meredith Elementary are currently at, or even over, capacity, showing that something needs to be done here.

Jackson Elementary’s principal wins ‘Best in Education’ award

Andrew Jackson Elementary School‘s principal, Lisa Kaplan, received a national award from The Best Schools for “Best in Education” for 2015.

With this win comes a nice chunk of prize money for the school. $10,000 is already designated to the school with the receipt of this award, but Kaplan is also donating her $10,000 in prize money to the school.
