What's Happening in:  East Passyunk Crossing

Hallelujah. Demo finally starting at Scarduzio’s 12th and Passyunk building

Fencing went up this morning at 12th and Morris, a blessed sign that demolition is finally starting on the former home of Artisan Boulanger, and the future home of chef Chris Scarduzio’s long-planned bistro.

We last checked in with Scarduzio in April — nearly two years since it was first reported about the project — and at the time he said he wanted to have the building torn down by the middle of May.

What’s up with that Scarduzio project at 12th and Morris?

It’s been nearly 22 months since news broke that chef/restaurateur Chris Scarduzio was planning to open a bistro in the former Artisan Boulanger at 12th and Morris, and more than a year since he got approval from the EPX zoning committee for the building he wants to construct in its place.

Now a sign pasted to the door warns him to tear the building down or repair it by March 31. Here we are, another week later, and nuthin’.

Well, you won’t have to wait much longer. “We’re looking to have this building down by the end of the month or middle of next month,” Scarduzio told us. “And we’re hoping to have everything up an running and filled, including the apartments upstairs, by the end of the year.”

FIRST PICS: Artisan Boulanger – now also with sandwiches, sushi, bahn mi, even cronuts

Getting booted from their home of 21 years was the best thing that could have happened to the venerable French bakery Artisan Boulanger Patissier.

Artisan Boulanger Patissier, 1218 Mifflin St., at long last

Their long-awaited new location at 1218 Mifflin St. finally opens today after literally a year delay, and they’ve amped up their offerings to expand well past their signature breads, pastries and desserts.

The menu will now include full-sized cakes, more pastries – including a nontrademarked name for their version of a cronut – sandwiches, bahn mi, grab ‘n’ go sushi, soups in the winter, Counter Culture coffee and espresso drinks, Thai tea, Vietnamese coffee, and more.

Their version of a cronut, made of layered croissant pastry dough, fried like a doughnut and injected with a marscapone-based filling. Yeah, it's good.

Artisan Boulanger finally opens on Mifflin on Sat., August 3

Well it’s about time, right?

Artisan Boulanger, the French bakery whose new location was supposed to be open in August 2012, will finally open  at 1218 Mifflin St. on Saturday, Aug. 3.

A sign popped up in the window last week heralding the most anticipated opening of any bakery we could ever think of. We haven’t been able to hook up with owner Andre Chin to find out what the latest holdup was – the latest projected opening timeline was nearly two months ago.

Artisan Boulanger is closed, getting ready for the move this month

UPDATE: Just passed by and the sign on the new location is going up!

The long saga of Artisan Boulanger’s move has inched another step forward. The bakery has closed at 12th and Morris in anticipation of its relocation to 1218 Mifflin St., which was deemed so inevitable last summer that Philly mag listed the new address as current in the September issue.

Out with the old...

The move lines up with the request of new building owner Chris Scaduzio (and partners), who told us in February that they had given the bakery 90 days to vacate. They plan to tear the building down and start fresh with a new building for his upcoming restaurant, which will have about 50 seats and a bar.

Scarduzio team gets receptive audience at EPX zoning meeting

The East Passyunk Civic Association’s monthly Zoning Committee meeting was ablaze with questions last night for Steve Olitsky, part-owner of the someday-to-be restaurant that will replace Artisan Boulanger at 12th and Morris.

This becoming pink facade will be coming down soon.

This becoming pink facade will be coming down soon.

Olitsky, who will co-own the joint with wife Tamar and chef Chris Scarduzio, was at the meeting seeking neighborhood support for his plans to demolish the existing, structurally-compromised building and replace it with a new three-story building. The building will feature a green roof and garden on top, a “green wall” at the rear, and outdoor seating for patrons along Morris Street.
