South Philly feud: B2 Cafe and the toddler with the cell phone

B2 Cafe, one of three South Philly coffee shops owned by Nancy Trachtenberg, is currently in a bit of a feud with a mother and others who allege one of the cafe’s baristas grabbed the cell phone out of the hands of a three-year-old girl who was playing music, saying “”I don’t want to listen to your music right now!”

That’s one side of the story, at least. According to Trachtenberg and others at the East Passyunk Avenue cafe, that’s not what actually happened.

What's Happening in:  Newbold 

‘Early spring’ opening for Benna’s West at Broad and Dickinson

It looks like something is finally coming to the long-vacant, aluminum-clad corner of Broad and Dickinson St.

Owner Nancy Trachtenberg tells us that Benna’s West, the third location in the Benna’s family that includes Benna’s and B2, will be opening at 1444 S. Broad St. sometime in early spring 2015. Much like their previous locales, the new shop promises to be good.

What's Happening in:  East Passyunk Crossing :  Lower Moyamensing :  Point Breeze 

To-Do List: 5-year Fringe anniversary; more Hawk Krall; discounted ‘Bathtub Moby Dick’; LoMo flea market; late-night cabaret…


Fringe salon at 1728  E. Passyunk Ave. is throwing a five-year anniversary party as part of Second Saturday from 6 to 9 p.m. Music will include Dj sets by Greg Mungan and ‘On & On’ along with Gretchen Elise and her live band! On the walls will be collages and paintings by Dan Eells. And there’ll be booze and snacks.


In other Second Saturday news, B2 will be hosting an art show by local food illustrator Hawk Krall, whose images adorn the Hot Diggity menu and were part of a show at Home furnishings boutique a few months back. This time, the work will be South Philly street scenes.

All weekend

The Renegade Theater company is putting on a play called “Bathtub Moby Dick” in an apartment at 1816 Wharton St., a space called Wharton Heights. 6 p.m. Tickets are $15 but for Passyunk Post readers, they are discounted to $10 if you buy them at the box office at the venue and use the code POST.
