Updated bike share locations, more details unveiled

We shared with you the preliminary plans for the first stage of the unveiling of the new bike share program, now called Indego, with 18 potential stations in South Philly. The new draft station map, which is still being finalized, has quite a few less stations placed in South Philly.

The preliminary map showed 18 stations throughout South Philly and now we’re down to just 12 stations of the 60 stations being planned across the city. Sounds like a pretty small number for such a big portion of the city, doesn’t it?

Bike ‘sharrows’ planned for the length of 13th and 15th streets

A $1.5 million grant announced last week will pave the way for bike infrastructure improvements, including along 13th and 15th streets through South Philly, but they’re not the full bike lanes that cyclists want and parkers fear.

Plan Philly reports that a slice of the money will fund what are called “sharrows” — a combination of the words “share” and “arrow” — to be painted on the roadway between South Street and Oregon Avenue. The bulk of that funding, however, will go toward the city’s planned (and delayed) bike share program.

Says Newsworks:

“Last year was the first time we tried something like this. It was a huge success. We had more than 100 people come out,” said [Nicholas Mirra, the coalition's communications coordinator]. “We had many people decorate their bikes with lights, wore lights on their bodies. One person towed a Christmas tree on a little flat platform that he built for the back of his bike. So the bike ride itself was an entertaining site in addition to the lights we checked out.”
