The cafe Black n Brew marked seven years this week at its bedazzled corner overlooking the fountain at 1523 E Passyunk Ave. And to celebrate, they’ve started BYOB service.
Remember days like this? This will be a nice day-drinking spot once the weather changes.
Hours will stay the same, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, so this will be a rare breakfast/lunch/brunch BYOB. Co-owner Colleen DeCesare says customers ask fairly regularly about having a drink with lunch, so they decided to accommodate.
More than 300 neighbors and visitors poured onto the streets around the fountain last night for the Christmas Tree Lighting on Passyunk Avenue and Tasker Street. As we told you last week, the street was closed off to cars and the block surrounding the fountain was bustling with couples, families, dogs and the big man himself, Santa.
Businesses along the Avenue provided free food and drinks for attendees. The hot chocolate from Black N Brew was the most popular treat given the chilly temperature. Stateside was offering a free cocktail, Belle Cakery gave out cookies and Ms. Goody Cupcake slung their treats, plus more, all for free.
The students of the Andrew Jackson School rock band played holiday classics while patrons waited for the tree to be lit. At 5:30 sharp, the countdown started and the tree lit up. Children cheered and singing filled the air well past the lighting. A group of youngsters from the Alphabet Academy hit center stage with Santa, while their parents watched in enjoyment.
The shops, street lights and houses along the Avenue are making East Passyunk start to look a lot like Christmas. For more Christmas spirit, check out this link for a line-up of the EPABID’s Deck the Avenue festivities, running all month long.
Sam Sherman at PARC says Stateside will be providing an “adult beverage;” Black & Brew, hot chocolate; FOND/Belle bakery, cookies/dessert; Paradiso/Izumi, sushi/bruschetta; Le Virtu, pasta; Birra—Pizza & meatballs; Chiarella’s, sausage and peppers, maybe.
From last year (and the Facebook invite)
Sherman says they’re closing the streets around the fountain this year in anticipation that they’ll have a larger crowd, as many as 400 people. No doubt that free stuff helps.
There will also be carolers from Alphabet Academy at 5 PM with Santa Claus arriving at 5:30. The student rock band from Andrew Jackson School will begin performing at 5:30. Cocktails and beverages should be ready to serve at 5 and food should be ready to serve by about 5:30. The whole shindig goes till about 7:30.
Check out the Facebook invite here. And you know what? We just realized the invite doesn’t say what time the actual lighting is. We’ll check in and get right back to you.
