Ulitmo’s the ultimate coffee shop in America

Ultimo, South Philly’s homegrown “Third Wave” coffee shop, was named the best coffee shop in America by, which was reported first by the Insider.

The shop, at 15th and Mifflin streets with a new location at 22nd and Catharine, was cited for high standards of customer service and great atmosphere without the attitude. Bonus points for sharing a corner with craft-beer sixpack shop Brew.

Normally, we don’t cotton to these kind of click-magnet listicles, but hell, if someone here is No. 1, that’s pretty damn cool. Makes sense since ASB is owned by John Longacre, which recruited Ultimo/Brew to the neighborhood. That’s called synergy, people.

About two years after the project was announced, developer John Longacre of LPMG Companies told us last week that the architects believe they’re about 30 days away from securing permits.

“So I expect the groundbreaking could be 30 to 45 days,” said Longacre, who owns the nearby South Philly Tap Room, American Sardine Bar and Brew/Ultimo coffee.

We noticed last week that the two-story properties were on the market and checked in with the realtor, who said they were finally able to secure financing.

So, what took so long?
