1188 items checked out, 102 new cards issued at Free Library’s grand opening at Broad and Morris

In January of 2014, the Free Library at Broad and Morris closed its doors to make way for something bigger and better – the new CHOP Community Health and Literacy Center.

That new facility was unveiled in early May, but the library was still empty at that time. At the grand opening celebration over the weekend, the new location for the library issued 102 new library cards, along with checking out more than 1,000 items to visitors. The neighborhood really did miss having a library.

You’ve seen the progress of the CHOP facility being built at Broad and Morris, being transformed from a much smaller Free Library location to a huge facility with quite a few different community uses.

South Philadelphia Community Health and Literacy Center unveiled earlier this week

In 2013 we first told you about the plans for the South Philadelphia Community Health and Literacy Center, a combination Children’s Hospital and Free Library facility at Broad and Morris.

That $45.2 million, 96,000 sq. ft. facility has now officially been unveiled.

New CHOP center location at Broad and Morris was once an orphanage

We’ve been following the development of the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia’s new multi-use wellness complex being built at Broad and Morris for a while now.

While it was previously the site of a branch of the Free Library of Philadelphia (this new complex will include a library, as well), the history of the location doesn’t stop there. Prior to the library being built on the property in the 1960s, the location was the home of The Southern Home for Destitute Children, an orphanage.

CHOP to put vibration monitors in basements across from Broad and Morris project

The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia has hired a construction vibration consultant to monitor the impact of its Broad Street complex on surrounding neighbors, according to a letter posted on the Newbold Neighbors Association website.

Preliminary work on CHOP’s community care center has already begun at 1700 S. Broad St.. Fencing went up about a month ago at the former library, which will be demolished any day now.

  • Plan Philly reported that the Civic Design Review committee asked Children’s Hospital last week to make significant changes to the way its proposed Schuylkill Avenue complex meets the street. Make it “less auto-centric,”  the CDR said.
  • And Naked Philly showed off renderings of the housing development that will take over the grassy, vacant lot on South Street where the Jamaican Jerk Hut has been jamming outdoors for years.
