Cousin’s Grubhouse a sign of life in ‘South Philly’s Wild West’

The breakfast/lunch joint Cousin’s Grubhouse, which we told you was revamped in March 2013, got some much-deserved praise in the City Paper last week.

Reviewer Adam Erace says the place, at 2340 S. Hemberger St., on West Passyunk near 23rd Street, is making “foodie baby steps for a bacon, egg and cheese crowd.” He liked the pancakes, pulled pork, biscuits and more, but he noted that the restaurant is doing more than just serving good food:

Though the food is terrific and the prices dirt cheap, Grubhouse is almost more important for what it represents for this neighborhood, where the nearby corners host Philip’s Steaks, Dati’s Water Ice and the kind of nail salons with Gina Gershon-in-Cocktail faces emblazoned on the signs and windows.

Devil’s Den is hosting the Pucker Up 4th Annual Sourfest, which starts Saturday and runs all week until Sunday, Aug. 25. There will be sixteen draft lines dedicated to sour beers Saturday, and at least eight the rest of the time. First Pics: Cousin’s Grubhouse opens with new owners on West Passyunk

Cousin’s Grubhouse on West Passyunk Ave re-opened last Wednesday with new owners, Jim Lord and William Schmidt. The reboot brings a fancy new menu featuring innovative diner fare to the place, which has been running out of that corner since 1955.

The owners say the menu will continue to evolve and offer more creative things, but they’ve already put some interesting items among the regular breakfast and lunch offerings. In addition to standard eggs and pancakes, there’s the Grubhouse Big Philly Omelette with steak, scrapple and pork roll, and Salted Caramel French Toast.
