Some jerk caught on video trying to get into cars

A poster on the Philadelphia Speaks forum captured this video of a guy nonchalantly testing car doors to see if any were open.

The pain of budget cuts wasn’t as apparent as some had feared at Southwark Elementary, says the South Philly Review, which highlighted the newly formed Team Dragon (named for the school mascot) and its efforts during the first week of school. New principal Andrew Lukov, who we interviewed a couple months back, praised the help he’s gotten from the community, particularly the EPX civic’s volunteers:

“No matter what we would have retained or lost, we still would have needed more,” Lukov, whose building includes art, computer, dance, music and physical education instruction, said of requiring individuals to aid the school’s students, who combined speak 20 languages. “We have to promote a positive climate, and I’m thrilled to have these helpers, whom I see as core resources.”

The civic’s education committee meets tomorrow night, Wednesday Sept. 18 at 7:30 p.m. in the Neumann-Goretti conference room. Lukov will be there, and you can find more info about the EPX committee on their Facebook page.

Rowhouse explosion roundup: Did a cigarette spark the blast?

The investigation is continuing into the gas explosion that leveled three rowhouses on the 400 block of Daly Street, but at least one official has said that a lit cigarette caused the boom.

Councilman Mark Squilla said firefighters at the scene told him that a man working on the house tried to light the water heater in the basement, couldn’t make it work, went outside, came back in and lit a cigarette.

Mayor Nutter, however, dismissed that as “pure speculation” (careful, autoplay video on that link).

SoPhilly Spotlight: Killer Dining Room edition

It’s not often we notice anything about dining rooms in South Philly – they’re rarely separate rooms at all – but that’s exactly what caught our attention for this week’s SoPhilly Spotlight.

The built-in shelving in this place, at 1236 Daly St., looks like it could have come out of a suburban basement wet bar.

And the outside is quite handsome as well.
