Laurel plans expansion to double seats, add bar

Top Chef winner Nick Elmi’s jewel-box of a BYOB, Laurel at 1617 E. Passyunk Ave., is one of the city’s toughest tables to get, with only 20 seats.

Maybe soon you’ll get a shot at eating there. The Insider reports that Elmi plans to take over the space next door, which for a hot minute was the breakfast place Dante after being the original home to Metro Men’s clothing.

You may want to get the grits at Dante Espresso Bar Cafe

In a glowing review of Dante Espresso Bar Cafe, Phyllis Stein-Novack of the South Philly Review gave it a near legendary 3 and a half tips of the toque.

The review itself, which was taken during a recent visit for brunch, heaps high praise on the crunchy french toast crusted with Frosted Flakes, French omelette and, most notably, the “creamiest stone-ground grits I have ever tasted,” declared Stein-Novack.

Cafe called Dante opening in Metro Men’s former home at 1615 E. Passyunk Ave.

The former home of Metro Men’s shop at 1615 E. Passyunk Ave. was snapped up just after the clothing store moved to a bigger location just up the block in September. Because of city permits, we knew it was going to be some sort of “prepared foods” place, but almost six months later, we’ve finally figured out what’s happening there.

A cafe called Dante, named after owner Pasquale DiGiulio’s son, is shooting to open in mid April, opening early for coffee (6:30 a.m., La Colombe) and serving a breakfast and lunch menu for most of the day. The menu will change midday, and food will be served until probably around 10 p.m., DiGiulio said.
