Lidl grocery store could be coming to Blatstein’s waterfront development

A German grocery store chain is looking to bring its stores to the Philadelphia-area, maybe even to Bart Blatstein’s planned waterfront development.

The discount grocery chain Lidl is in the process of acquiring locations throughout Philadelphia. While not confirmed, Lidl is being marketed as a potential tenant for Blatstein’s planned mixed-use project at 1401-99 Columbus Blvd.

Design Advocacy Group urges Bart Blatstein to ‘listen carefully to the voices of opposition’

Just after hearing less-than-positive feedback from the Civic Design Review, the Design Advocacy Group has decided to weigh in on Bart Blatstein’s South Philly projects. The plans for a 32-story tower and rooftop village at Broad and Washington and the 16-acre commercial and residential complex being planned along the Delaware River have previously received criticism from The Inquirer’s architecture critic, as well.

Now in an open letter, the Design Advocacy Group is urging Blatstein to begin listening to the criticism and make feasible improvements that “could be the start of a real conversation.”

United By Blue continuing Delaware River cleanup efforts with April cleanup

Over the last few years, Philadelphia-based clothing and coffee retailer United By Blue has contributed to the removal of over 19,000 lbs of waste from the Delaware River through a series of cleanups.

These cleanup events are hosted at various locations, including a few different points of the Delaware River. A cleanup event is being hosted in April starting at Pier 68, the new pier park that opened in the fall just off of the South Philly Walmart parking lot.

Blatstein plans commercial and residential complex for 16-acre plot of land on Columbus Boulevard

Bart Blatstein, the man behind the massive development proposed for Broad and Washington, seems to have his eyes on a new project, this time along the Delaware River.

At 1401-99 Columbus Blvd., the currently-empty 16-acre plot of land is expected to become a complex with a mix of residential and retail.

New land acquired for planned improvements to the Delaware River trail

In recent years, there has been a lot happening along the Delaware River with plans for expansion of the river trail and work on the new Pier 68 park.

A look at the land acquisitions along the river trail.

Now this project to improve the riverfront is close to moving forward now that the Delaware River Waterfront Corp. has acquired another section of land, in addition to another deal in the works to purchase a parcel of land from Bart Blatstein. These new acquisitions would mean another 0.7 mile portion of the river trail that would be improved as as part of the bigger plans to have this 3.3 mile trail renewed and expanded all the way north to Fishtown.
