Mississippi flag removed from Broad Street

As you’ve likely noticed by now, state flags are hanging along South Broad Street for the Democratic National Convention happening this week.

Mississippi’s flag, located between Mifflin and Mckean Streets, has caused a bit of controversy. During a protest yesterday, city officials removed the flag due to residents and protesters objecting to the confederate flag on the state’s banner.

What's Happening in:  All over South Philly 

Spotted: Broad Street median mural being installed

South Broad Street is getting a little more colorful. A few weeks back we shared with you the plans for a median mural by artist Mat Tomezsko that would brighten up Broad for the Democratic National Convention later this month.

That mural is in the process of being installed, bringing bright stripes to a 14-block-span of South Broad Street. The piece, titled “14 Movements: A Symphony in Color and Words,” spans from City Hall to Washington Avenue. Continue Reading →

Broad Street median parking will not be allowed during the DNC

The Democratic National Convention may be bringing some cool additions to South Philly and the city at large, with things like murals and the decorated donkeys, but it is also complicating daily routines for many in the city.

In addition to the off-limit areas in the Stadium District for the convention from July 25 through 28, South Philadelphians are going to have to face even more of a parking struggle than usual. Parking on the median of South Broad Street is being banned for the duration of the DNC.

From July 25 through July 28, about 50,000 people are expected to come into the city for the Democratic National Convention, happening at the Wells Fargo Center.

Spotted: Democratic National Convention donkeys installed around South Philly

The Democratic National Convention is coming to Philly at the end of the month, bringing tons of political action to the city. Along with increased activity, some improvements are also coming to the area, like the median mural being installed on South Broad Street.

Another one of the improvements is the installation of colorful donkeys throughout the city to represent the fifty states, along with Washington, D.C. and the six other U.S. territories. Those donkeys have been popping up around the city, including five at locations in South Philly.
