What's Happening in:  Packer Park

Marconi Plaza warns dog owners about letting pets relieve themselves in child play areas

As some of you may recall, a few years back we were on a “dog shit crusade” to make an attempt to stop dog owners from simply leaving their pet’s poop on the sidewalk. It’s been two years since we’ve written one of those posts, but the problems regarding trash cleanup and dog poop are never-ending in the city.

Marconi Plaza, the park space at Broad and Oregon, is currently experiencing some difficulties with pet owners letting their dogs relieve themselves in the child-specific play areas of the park, making for an unsanitary scene. Friends of Marconi Plaza are now “asking parents to call the police if you are experiencing violations or abuse of the children’s play areas.”

Dog Shit Crusade: Know this bad pet owner?

Speaking of ick…

A little over a year ago, we launched a Dog Shit Crusade to rid our streets of the putrid piles of poop that too-often dotted our sidewalks, asking readers to send in videos of the stinky scofflaws so we could publicly shame them into stopping.

Juvenile? Yes. But effective? Seems like it.

Here’s one more, and if you’re grossed out by the idea, don’t watch the video.

Each spokesdog will be chosen at a community event and the winning dogs’ images will be used on a number of brochures, advertisements, websites, etc. Winning spokesdogs will be ambassadors to the City for living the eco-friendly dog life.

Fox 29 has taken a shine to our Dog Shit Crusade, aka public shaming of dog owners who don’t pick up after their pets.

Reporter Omari Fleming interviewed Passyunk Post editor Albert Stumm for a story that aired last night on the crusade, which so far has included posting video of one negligent pet owner and showing off some of the more whimsical efforts by our neighbors to curb the problem.

Dog Shit Crusade: #PoopIsntWorthPrison, so call 9-1-1? That’s what they said.

An interesting Twitter exchange last week was picked up by the crime blog Philly Confidential, and it eventually led us to confirm that yes, the police want you to call 9-1-1 if you catch a dog owner not picking up after his dog.

But let’s back up first. Here’s how it started Continue Reading →

Dog Shit Crusade: Scoop the Poop Campaign launches in Queen Village

Hallelujah! The Dog Shit Crusade continues.

The Queen Village Neighbors Association is taking a stand against the steaming mounds that too often litter our fine streets by installing dog-waste receptacles complete with bag dispensers around their neighborhood. Five went up two weekends ago, and five more will be installed in the coming weeks, according the the civic’s blog.

The QVNA says it borrowed the idea from the Old City Civic Association, which installed similar stations at the end of 2011. For those who worry that the stations will fester, fear not, says QVNA:
