Completed Pier 68 park to be unveiled on October 1

Last week we told you about the new land acquisitions for the Delaware River Trail. Now there’s even more reason to be excited about the future of the waterfront, with the completion of Pier 68 park.

Work began on the park earlier this summer after being talked about since 2013. This new space on the formerly abandoned pier near the Walmart on Columbus Boulevard is now ready to be unveiled at a ceremony on October 1.

New land acquired for planned improvements to the Delaware River trail

In recent years, there has been a lot happening along the Delaware River with plans for expansion of the river trail and work on the new Pier 68 park.

Now this project to improve the riverfront is close to moving forward now that the Delaware River Waterfront Corp. has acquired another section of land, in addition to another deal in the works to purchase a parcel of land from Bart Blatstein. These new acquisitions would mean another 0.7 mile portion of the river trail that would be improved as as part of the bigger plans to have this 3.3 mile trail renewed and expanded all the way north to Fishtown.

Washington Avenue Pier sanctuary opens at Pier 53

The Washington Avenue Pier park has opened at Pier 53 behind the Sheet Metal Workers’ union headquarters, at Washington Avenue and Columbus Boulevard.

City bigwigs on Friday cut the ribbon on the park, which provides a sanctuary and bird-watching area that injects a little nature into the city. The park includes a 55-foot Land Buoy sculpture, by artist Jody Pinto, that doubles as a lookout station. For an interesting look into Pinto’s artistic heritage, check out this Hidden City story.

Check out the design for Pier 68, South Philly’s third new planned park

Grab your fishing pole. Well, soon.

By this time next year, the abandoned Pier 68 behind the Walmart shopping center on Columbus Boulevard will be transformed into a park that will serve as the southern gateway to the Delaware River trail.

City officials and the Delaware River Waterfront Corporation unveiled designs yesterday for the planned pier park, which will include space for fishing, relaxing and education.
