First Pics: El Sarape opens new location at 1304 S. 9th St.

El Zarape previously occupied the space at 1648 E. Passyunk Ave., but because of an increase in rent, they were forced to move out of that space, which is now occupied by Bing Bing Dim Sum.

Their old spot closed back in March and the new location opened sometime in mid-February at 1304 S. 9th St.

Bing Bing Dim Sum is coming to the wedge at 12th and Morris in the not-to-distant future

The guys from the ever-popular Cheu Noodle Bar have announced that the East Passyunk’s other hotly-anticipated restaurant (See: Palladino’s), Bing Bing Dim Sum, will open in January.

Michael Klein of The Insider got the scoop from owners Ben Puchowitz and Shawn Darragh, who said the project is in the ”very late phases of construction.” Klein also states the menu will have a “funky inauthenticity” in the same vein as Cheu Noodle Bar in Washington Square West. Continue Reading →

Cheu guys’ Passyunk spot will have ‘other group of Asian food,’ under $20 price point, more

Paper has gone up on the windows of the Asian restaurant that we told you last month will be replacing the former El Zarape at 12th and Passyunk, and more details have emerged on the concept.

The red awnings are gone, and so is that towering sign above the corner.

Shawn Darragh and Ben Puchowitz, the owners of Center City’s Cheu Noodle Bar, told Philly.com that their second restaurant, planned for 1648 E. Passyunk Ave., will have an open kitchen with a prep area, windows in the dining room that swing open onto the sidewalk and “a price point sitting at just under $20.”

The prep area will go where El Zarape’s short-lived grocery store was located, next to Mr. Martino’s, which should open up more space for the dining room.

El Zarape’s last day in current location is next week

The final day for El Zarape in its current prime location at 12th, Morris and Passyunk will be on March 14, according to a sign announcing the move.

The Mexican BYOB will be relocating to an old cellphone store at  1304 S. 9th St., though manager Armando Aparicio said they don’t plan to be open for another three months.

El Zarape gets neighbor OK for move to 1304 S. 9th St.

The Passyunk Square Civic approved a new location for El Zarape at its zoning meeting last week, clearing the way for the Mexican BYO to spruce up 1304 S. 9th St., which looks like an old garage but is actually a Metro PCS store.

Of course that means El Zarape will be moving out of its prime corner spot at 12th and Passyunk. The new space, which includes the cell phone shop’s storefront on 1305 E. Passyunk Ave., is at the heart of cheesesteak central, a couple doors down from Pat’s.

Higher rent puts El Zarape on the move

E Zarape, the taqueria in the pie-shaped corner spot at 12th and Passyunk, has signed a lease on a new location in cheesesteak central.

El Zarape will go before the Passyunk Square Civic Association zoning committee on Tuesday to get community input on its new proposed spot, 1304-06 9th St, which is two doors down from Pat’s Steaks. The building will need a zoning variance to serve food.
