Interesting art show at unusual venue – Tenth Street Laundromat

The Tenth Street Laundromat on 1141-43 S. 10th St. is more than just a laundromat. It’s also a little art gallery, and this month it’s hosting an interesting exhibition of works by participants of Oasis, a community outsider art center.

Lisa Budnick created the Isaiah Zagar inspired mosaic on the storefront after taking a class with Zagar.

Owner Lisa Budnick created the Isaiah Zagar inspired mosaic on the storefront after taking a class with him.

“It gives people exposure to art while doing laundry and inspires them,” said owner Lisa Budnick, who has been putting up art from as far back as 2006. The Oasis program serves individuals with mental and emotional disabilities.

SoPhilly Spotlight: Pennsport ‘Mini Mansion’ edition

Since it was Two Street’s time to shine this week, we figured a Pennsport  SoPhilly Spotlight  was in order, hence 226 Ellsworth St. It’s not much to look at from the outside, but man, is it ever huge – a “mini mansion,” says the Craigslist ad.

The home has 4 bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms in 2,800 square feet, plus room for either two parking spots or a yard. That would be nice. But oh, did we mention? It’s going for $599,000.

Coffee, dessert bar proposed for 12th and Ellsworth

Real-estate agent Paul Chin went before the Passyunk Square Civic Association’s zoning committee this week to pitch his idea to open a coffee shop and bakery at 1149 S. 12th St.

The shop would be mostly grab-and-go with limited seating inside, about eight to 12 seats, said Tina Geary of the zoning committee. Baking would be done on-site and coffee will be come from Green Street Roaster at 19th and Alter streets.  Proposed hours are 6:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday,  Sundays 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Added bonus: Chin said he’d “have one of his employees walk a 1 block radius daily to sweep up any trash on the streets,” Geary said.

SoPhilly Spotlight: Point Breeze condo edition

This week’s SoPhilly Spotlight comes with all the space of a house, but without that pesky first floor. 1603 Ellsworth St. #B (yes, we’re aware that B is not a number) is being sold as a rare Point Breeze condo in the top two floors of this handsome, renovated rowhouse.

It comes with 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms. and 1,300 square feet. With digs like that, who needs a first floor? The listing also says that like large condo developments, there’s an “HOA fee.” It’s $120 a month, though it’s not clear what that pays for.

The pain of budget cuts wasn’t as apparent as some had feared at Southwark Elementary, says the South Philly Review, which highlighted the newly formed Team Dragon (named for the school mascot) and its efforts during the first week of school. New principal Andrew Lukov, who we interviewed a couple months back, praised the help he’s gotten from the community, particularly the EPX civic’s volunteers:

“No matter what we would have retained or lost, we still would have needed more,” Lukov, whose building includes art, computer, dance, music and physical education instruction, said of requiring individuals to aid the school’s students, who combined speak 20 languages. “We have to promote a positive climate, and I’m thrilled to have these helpers, whom I see as core resources.”

The civic’s education committee meets tomorrow night, Wednesday Sept. 18 at 7:30 p.m. in the Neumann-Goretti conference room. Lukov will be there, and you can find more info about the EPX committee on their Facebook page.
