From September 1 through September 5, you can swing by the FDR Park at Broad and Pattison to enjoy drinks, food and entertainment thanks to the Parks on Tap program created by Parks and Recreation and the Fairmount Park Conservancy.

Beer gardens popping up at Jefferson Square, FDR Park this summer

The South Street West Pennsylvania Horticultural Society pop-up garden won’t be the only beer garden in South Philly this summer.

Earlier this year the Department of Parks and Recreation and the Fairmount Park Conservancy announced a plan to operate beer gardens throughout the city at various parks. Two South Philly community spaces will be transformed for a few days this summer for Parks on Tap.

Fringe Festival event to bring apes to FDR Park

Just your everyday stroll through FDR Park includes plenty of greenery, but does it have apes?

The Renegade Company will be putting on a show in FDR Park for this year’s Fringe Festival that will be a mash-up performance of films like “Planet of the Apes,” “Tarzan the Ape Man” and “King Kong.” This performance will be happening while you go on a guided tour of the park, ruled by the laws of the jungle.

Project 250 ruled as being unsuitable for FDR Park

In December we told you about a proposal for a velodrome to be built on the parkland at FDR Park. The project was hoping to gain approval to build a facility for bike racing and community use within the bounds of the park with the use of the open lands protection ordinance.

The decision from the Philadelphia Commission on Parks and Recreations stated that using this parkland for a velodrome would disturb a large portion of the park’s offerings.

Community responds to proposed velodrome at FDR Park

Project 250, a velodrome and mixed-use facility for the community that could be coming to FDR Park pending the approval of the City of Philadelphia, presented plans for the project at a meeting on Wednesday night.

At Wednesday’s meeting at the American Swedish Historical Museum, more than 150 neighbors and cyclists alike came together to hear the plans and voice their opinions on the project. While many back the project, some cyclists and neighbors voiced concerns about the location of the facility at FDR Park.

Plans for velodrome in FDR Park include park improvements, community activities

Project 250, a velodrome and mixed-use facility for the community, could be coming to FDR Park across from the stadiums, pending the approval of the City of Philadelphia.

In case you’re wondering, a velodrome is an embanked oval track used for fixed gear, no-brake cycling races. Only a very limited number of these establishments exist throughout the United States, with the next closest facility being the Valley Preferred Cycling Center located in Trexlertown, PA.
