Michelle and Paul Gillen-Doobrajh opened Tildie’s Toy Box over the weekend at 1829 E. Passyunk Ave. The shop is filled to the brim with toys for kids from birth through 14-years-old.

AmeriThai, the corner takeout that took over a long-vacant space, has opened at 1244 Snyder Ave. and we happened to stop by yesterday when two local monks came in with gifts to welcome the new business. The monks, from the temple at 20th and Washington, also came in with a money tree to raise funds for the national temple located in Washington, D.C.

The East Passyunk boutique boom has crossed Washington with the opening of Maker’s Dozen this past Wednesday in Bella Vista.

After a stint on the website team at Philadelphia’s own shopping conglomerate Urban Outfitters/Anthopologie, owner Chris Love left for the siren call of the Silicon Valley. When the start-up he worked for shut down, Love took some time off to travel. It was through these travels that he discovered and fell in love with the world of outsider art (artists with no formal training.)

First Pics: Madira Bar opens with huge craft-beer takeout selection at 21st and Titan

Madira Bar and Grill, a welcome craft-beer addition to Point Breeze we told you about in October, is all set to start slinging hundreds of beer options at 21st and Titan.

Yes, he plans to spruce up the wood-covered windows, but no windows aren't going in.

The takeout portion of the bar, at 1252 S 21st St., opened yesterday in a separate corner room on the first floor. More than 400 brands are available in mixed six-packs, said manager Gary Patel. The bar itself will open next Friday, Feb. 7. Check out the menu below.

First Pics: The Pharmacy coffee shop/cafe opens at 18th and Wharton

A new coffee shop/gallery/music venue called The Pharmacy opened this month in a part of the neighborhood that could really use a coffee shop.

The Pharmacy opened last week, and it's unique for its art shows and live bands.

The Pharmacy, a coffee shop, not a prescription-dispensing place, also offers art shows and live bands.

Owner Gary Viteri said he opened The Pharmacy at  1300 S. 18th St. with the idea of bringing the community together through art and music as well as coffee, pastries, bagels and a handful of other breakfast and lunch items, many of them vegan. Check out the full menu here.

So, why this name? Before Viteri occupied the space, the building served as a medical office. The main room was a waiting room and there was a pharmacy behind the building where a doctor was selling illegal prescriptions, he said. The medical office was shut down and the building went to sheriff sale.
