Proposed Freda Meat facility mixed-use project is all about the billboard

The long-standing Freda Meats factory on Front Street in Pennsport could become a a mixed-use project with 48 apartments, a ground-floor parking garage, 4 townhouses and 30,000 sq. ft of commercial space. While the concept of transforming this Pennsport block is huge in itself, the major part of the project is a 120 ft. tall LED billboard that would be placed on the roof, in replacement of the outdated and just-too-short to be seen from I-95 structure currently on top of the warehouse.

At Tuesday night’s Pennsport Civic Association meeting, the room of 50 area residents expressed concerns mainly about the massive billboard that they believe would affect the neighborhood’s view, even more so than the existing Chickie’s and Pete’s billboard. Throughout the presentation it was emphasized by the development team that without this billboard, the project will not happen.

Cafe opening in former vacuum repair shop near Front and Snyder

A new business called Valena’s Simple Cafe is coming to the former vacuum repair shop and “music spot” near the corner of Front and Snyder.

At this time we don’t know much about this new business, but a “coming soon” banner is currently hanging outside of the location.

Pennsport’s South Helm receives two-bell review

Pennsport’s restaurants are on a roll. Very recently The Dutch received a two-bell review from Craig Laban, now another nearby restaurant has also received a “very good” review from The Inquirer food critic. This is a nice turnaround for these locations, which both were homes to different restaurants last year.

Dog runs in the works under I-95 in Pennsport, here’s a look at renderings

Is Pennsport going to the dogs? Last week we told you about the proceedings at a Dickinson Square West Civic Association meeting regarding the creation of a dog run for Dickinson Square.

That meeting highlighted some of the negativity surrounding a dog run for the park, but it was also made clear that many residents, even those opposed to that specific location, want to see this happen somewhere in the neighborhood. Another separate group of residents is now working on plans for a dog run, this one located under I-95.
